I'll trade in my Blackberry to help fund it...

My point - When the 3rd gen came out in the fall of 2015, the Qi charger would not charge any Apple phone but it would an android. Android leads IOS by 3:2 here in the US. Sure, Apple is the most popular phone but Android is the most popular operating system. Why would Toyota not go for the most popular OS? That's my point. Who knows though.. what you guys are reading are nothing but rumors.

My wife can have whatever phone she wants, all she has to do is ask.

It wouldn't charge an Apple phone because APPLE DIDN'T INSTALL WIRELESS CHARGING CAPABILITY UNTIL 2017.

Exactly, so why would they install an interface (apple car play) that is not going to reach the most customers (android) and already installed wireless charging (no apple until 2017) to cater to other phones? That's my point.

Whatever interface is "best" is irrelevant. It's like talking which is better - Ford or Chevy. My opinion.

I really hope they add this as a download. I was planning on getting a new head unit for android auto capability. Kenwood is coming out with one that doesn't need a cable. I'd even be tempted to buy a factory 2019 tacoma head unit if it can have android auto.

Most units that support CarPlay also support Android Auto. The only difference is software so they are rarely not packaged together.

Thats what I thought too, which is why when I read the last line of the article linked in the OP, I didn´t have confidence in what I just read previously in that article.

¨Automakers seem to have been reluctant to allow both Android Auto and CarPlay on their platforms initially, but most are coming around – and I’m willing to bet customer feedback is a big reason why.¨

All vehicles I have ever seen with Apple Car Play also supported Android Auto. :notsure:

For those who really want both, you can get an aftermarket head unit plus Maestro idatalink to keep all OEM functionality (steering wheel controls, car option adjustments, auto rear camera, etc). The only thing that wont work is navigation directions on the center display.

I mean, the truck has a Siri eyes-free button that won't do shit on an Android phone. It can't even be programmed to send a command to Android.

Yep and funny enough, the Google phones removed wireless charging in favor of usb c quick charging.
