The article says that they will be adding Apple CarPlay to the 2019 Entunes 3.0 and 2.0 radios (starting with the 2019 Avalons), but I bet the 2.0 radios won't see it until a long long time after all the new lineups have them.

There is no mention of wireless access.

Now they just need to add Android Auto.

If they don't add Android Auto.....no deal

So does it mean late models can upgrade the Apple car play who have entune 3.0?

Not familiar with the entune versions but does this mean I'll be able to software upgrade my entune system on my 2012? Or is this for 3rd gen only

I know after Ram offered it in the 2017 and newer models for the Uconnect 8.4 systems, you couldn't retrofit the 2016 and older systems with Carplay/Android Auto due to hardware limitations.

I'm not even sure they will do it for the current 3rd Gen's because we have Entunes 2. Toyota doesn't outright say that they are only going to activate it in 3.0 systems 9that currently don't have it), but like Matt3400 said, I think there is also a hardware limitation. I say this because I believe wireless Android Auto needs WiFi to (fully) work and our trucks do not have any WiFi hardware built in (that I know of).

Toyota announced that even the 2018 Camry would not get CarPlay (it has Entune 3.0). It would only be in 2019 vehicles and beyond.

Hopefully the 2019 Tacoma will have CarPlay. However I’m not optimistic due to the 2019 TRDs not having a CarPlay or Entune 3.0 announcement. It will likely be MY2020 for Tacoma, but maybe they will surprise us :)

Doesn't surprise me...Tacomas seem to be last priority when it comes to interior tech upgrades.

If someone really wants it though, it's not that hard to put in another HU that will have wireless AA or CP. Heck, once it does make it to the 2019 (or 2020) Tacomas, It won't be much longer that you'll be able to buy one cheap from this forum that you can likely put into your 2017 Taco. There is always someone who is not happy with the Entunes HU and will swap it out for an aftermarket HU. :)

Surprised Toyota hasn't gone to CarPlay already, especially given the demographics their are supposedly marketing to. Just had a rental that had CP for the past week and I'm sold on it. I'm starting to look for a replacement for my 2000 Tundra and CP is on the list.

    None Yet ... soon though!
It seems that CarPlay could be a fairly easy software update for the Entune system. I don’t have to have the wireless option. I would gladly plug in to the built in USB to be able to use CarPlay.

The article mentions that Enform 2.0 is going to have it. Enform is the Lexus version. So it looks like we won’t be seeing it in our trucks.

    This is correct.

    From the article:
The 2019 Avalon and future models (including Lexus vehicles) with an Entune 3.0 or Enform 2.0 system will support Apple CarPlay, letting you use the more sophisticated apps from your iPhone instead of making do with limited built-in features.

Entune 2.0 will never see this update, ever.

In articles I've read the hardware in current Tacomas will not be compatible with entune 3.0 and will not be able to upgrade the software to support it. Only option is to replace with a HU that has it.
