That sure is the popular narrative. I guess it's true if "truck stuff" doesn't include using the pickup bed for hauling stuff in it and instead it means looking pretty while going off-road. I totally agree they all have their strength and weaknesses. I just don't think the authors knocking the Ridgeline for its brakes under load when it stops shorter than the Tacoma while carrying 40% more weight is fair. Seems subjective, not objective. I wish they towed with all three at 5k pounds in this test. That would be interesting to see.

Hopefully the Ranger will be the best at everything.

Best at everything? Wont even touch that one.

I'll just be waiting in the woods to see how many show up.

I think the idea of a "Small F-150" would ring pretty true with many people in my area. Some people love having a big old truck, but I love midsize because you can actually still park them downtown.

I think on paper it will be lower, guessing the frame is essentially the same, can't imagine Ford trying to reinvent the wheel with a completely different frame. Looks like they didn't stray too far from the Global Platform, like Chevy and Toyota has done.

Maybe the springs will be specced a little softer, but nothing a set from ARB/Old Man Emu wouldn't fix, which they already exist.

Hit the nail on the head with what its like out here 100% too. The duality of living where theres mountains, farms, and industry almost requires both.

I mean I hope the truck does well because good competition makes all the mfgs up their standards. If it were smaller, and less shaped like a twinkie, I'd be all for it.

The biggest thing for me is that the US you have 2 kinds of weather. Difficult weather, and dangerous weather. Snow, ice, and a month long flood season in New England for me means you need a reliable platform, not just big numbers on a light duty truck.

There wont be anything to say about the ranger until 3 years and 120,000 miles later. There's barely enough out about the 3rd gen taco to weight it. Other than the MT was the way to go ;) .

One thing i am curious about is across the board most publications say that different transmission might he available in years to come. If they offer an MT I might have to take a second look in years to come.

I'm heading to NAIAS on Saturday. I'll try to get as many pics as possible of the new ranger.

I looked at the Ridgeline as it would work for about 90% of the things I do. But no low range, gas mpg is so-so (wasn't the whole point of going unibody to save on gas?), and they aren't exactly cheap for an AWD. You can get a basic 4WD Tacoma, Frontier, GM twins for several thousand less.

Oh, and I tend to run down wash boards road an awful lot, fear that the Unibody wouldn't hold up from years and years of doing that. Believe a BOF vehicle is better suited for that kind of abuse since it flexes more.

I still see tons of the old rangers putting down the road everyday. One advantage to buying a ranger is there are ford dealers everywhere. The disadvantage is having to deal with the ford dealers. Shady folks.

Midwest USA has infinitely more old Rangers on the road than 1st gen Tacos, but we've got our fair share of 2nd gen Tacos for sure.

Stranger still! I see roughly the same amount of Rangers and 1st Gen Tacomas running around...in all stages of decay....some look brand new others clapped the effe out. :p :D :)

What really dominates here are Subies "puffy THE North Face jacket, trucker hat wearing, lumbersexuals namaste hipster doofuses" in the city, and 3/4-1 ton "deezul coal rollin', git-r-done, bud drinkin', redneck confederate flag waving, hell-billies" out in the cuntry.

Rangers and Tacomas seem to be low on the totem pole here for the most part.

Toyota dealers in rural South Georgia are a recent addition. I deal with prince Toyota and they are easy and laid back people. Great service dept and reasonable prices for regular maintenance. Oil change with synthetic and inspection is $59 for 2.7.

Mine looks better than that with 364K miles on it, granted it has spent most of its' life in AZ. Last 3.5 years in Idaho, getting some minimal surface rust. Try to get under there after every snow storm road salt/mag chloride fest and keep it clean. When it warms up in the spring I hit any rust spots with a rust inhibitor.

That is probably a good thing, cause the Aussies know how to thrash a vehicle right proper.

Have bud that works in the mining industry over there and Africa, they are in LC70's and HiLuxes all day long. Has a Ranger as his personal vehicle...
