So I went to test drive an 18 Tacoma TRD or with technology package. The salesman had me drive over a solid line to activate (I assume) the lane departure system. It beeped, which I expected, but the truck also spit a little washer fluid on the windshield (I'm assuming to alert you). It caught me so off guard it actually made me laugh out loud. Afterward I started thinking about this system, and now I have a few questions.

Is it supposed to do that?

Is this system standard or part of the tech package.

Can I turn off the spitting part? On an empty highway I don't always use my turn signal, and I don't want to get the truck dirty every time I don't.

About a year ago I drove a Rav4 with the LDS. It did not spit. I thought it was the most annoying thing. It was a loaner and as soon as it was in my drive way I grabbed the owners manual and deactivated it!

I wish I was making this stuff up. Salesman didn't seem to think anything of it. I flipped the wipers on to wipe off the safety spit, and continued the test drive.

When my unit is in imminent danger it spits, yes it's part of the package.

I thought for sure there would be plenty of smart ass replies to a "spitting" truck.
Something like this came to mind

My rav has the LDS. It does not “spit.” It’s annoying, because I seldom use my turn signal. While driving down an incredibly curvy road it has told me I needed to rest.

There's a gif on here somewhere that starts with this, and continues with multiple people getting "spit" on.

Definitely not a thing---my guess is the ECU needs reset, something got crossed, or you accidentally bumped the wiper stalk...my wifes 2017 with TSS does not spit anything on the windshield nor do I turn it on when I'm driving as I tend to get annoyed by its features

My fathers new tundra has the LDS, and it just makes beeping and shows a warning symbol on the little screen in between the tach and speedo.
    No wiper fluid is expelled

My mom’s dog used to piss on itself whenever somebody accidentally scarred it, I don’t think that truck was spitting :D

Is it possible some water that was sitting somewhere on the truck blew onto the windshield? On my truck, sometimes water will blow out of the hood scoop or off the wiper blades onto the windshield.

This feature only applies to vehicles sold on the Left Coast. Politicians in your area are also pushing a Bill that would require a safety interlock whereby the vehicle will not start if there is insufficient fluid in the windshield washer reservoir. The California Medical Review Board opposes the measure however, as WWF (Windshield Washer Fluid) has been shown to be a known carcinogen in the State of California.
