I wanted to add a cold air intake and a turn down exhaust to squeeze a little more power out of my 05' 5 lug taquito. But Im in California and I'm worried about smog check and having CARB approved parts. Anyone running any of these mods, and what have the results been like? Also if you have any suggestions on CARB approved intakes and exhausts I'm open to suggestions.

I'm in CA as well, I've put numerous intakes on vehicles and gotten them smogged. As long as the intake has the CARB approve sticker with the numbers n all that, you'll be good to go. Whatever you buy make sure you actually call the vendor and get a "CARB approved" or "50 state legal" intake. As far as brands, I've heard nothing but good things about AFE magnum force intakes w/ the dry no oil filter. I've also heard power gains are marginal w/ all air intakes on tacomas.

And welcome to tacoma world!! :)

The only CARB approved intake I know of is the TRD one. And I agree that any power you feel is marginal at best. The stock intake is already considered a cold air intake!

Regear or go with Mini Cooper wheels. It's weak at the low end in all gears so someday I might regear but not anytime soon. I didn't buy it to hurry anywhere.

Stick with the stock intake. Not worth the money for an after market. Your stock intake is already a CAI.

An intake gives you nothing if you are not boosted! Sounds good but no HP..

The only cai that is carb legal is the Trd.
I ran the Volant cai, with optional scoop. I had a noticeable mid range increase. I took it off to pass smog and put stock back on, I noticed the difference from cai to stock. In my opinion the Volant is one of the few true cai’s Cause it picks up the air in front of the radiator

Won't add any power but will change the noise.

    Oh it's a 5 lug...better known as a tortoise

A stock cai is quiet because potential buyers like quiet. If it is quiet, it has to be baffled in some way. It is , therefore, restricting airflow. Aftermarket cais are loud because they don't restrict the airflow for the sake of quietness. With the restriction eliminated and airflow increased, throttle response and hp is improved. Dyno tests have shown this. Of course, the amount of improvement depends on how well the cai and vehicle work together.

Also (atleast in my 08) there is a secondary filter. Most aftermarkets remove that filter Which Is what Volant told me is the reason that makes them non carb certifiable

Most of the noise baffling is in the fender, so take the baffling off the stock intake, I think there is a velocity stack you can put on the air box for the 2.7 probably the 4.0s too. You would have to take the baffling out of the fender so you could put it on though

With the 2.7 I think you're better off getting new headers for small boost in power. But if your truck is the auto 5 lug the gearing is not helping.

Yep getting a junkyard third member with 3.73 or 4.10 gears would probably be the easiest and cheapest way to get more get up and go from your 5 lug.
