It does look cool and flat black is the schiz nizzle...

How does it hold up to repeated washings?

Would it be better to Have them professionally painted or Powder coated...? i mean after all that work and them looking so nice I wouldn't want them to change or scratch easily.

I didn't spend enough time on mine, paint chipped a bit. I'm gonna redo it once the weather is warmer.

I have a black DC TRD. I blacked out the emblem and I'm jsut waiting for it to dry. I was thinking about either debagding or painting them in black or red. I think the black would look nice.
This thread is very helpful. Thank you!

Looks good man. When are we getting together to knock out our back rear bumpers? Im all blacked out, but my rear bumper is too shiny. Tons of write ups on this site, but I still havent gotten around to it. Hell, I'd even consider a light, thiner than Hurculine bed lining.

does anyone see the downside of using something like gorilla glue/crazy glue instead of tediously cutting double sided tape to reapply? besides the obvious increased difficulty in removing them some other time.

I wouldn't do that. Just cut small pieces of the 3m tape and remove a bunch of little strips to stick it on.

Looks good, I did this to my truck but painted red. I didn't rough up the badges either and I used some 3m adhesive it's like super glue, was kinda messy on the first one but dried clear and looks pretty good. Anyway nice job.

    I did not use either.

I wet sanded them with 400 grit wet/dry paper, cleaned them real good with denatured alcohol, then painted them with Krylon Fusion spray paint. I did mine 1 1/2 years ago and they are holding up really well.

I'm getting some side steps that will ne powder coated. Wonder if the badges could be powder coated to match the steps.

The badges are ABS plastic. Not metal. With metal you ground the part, apply powder paint, then bake it. Simple. With plastic they would have to bake the part first then apply the powder quickly while the part was still hot. That's assuming that the part wouldn't be ruined by the heat. And them it would be difficult to get the coating as thin as it needs to be or to make it look good. And I doubt powder paint sticks to chrome any better than liquid paint so any professional coating shop would strip the chrome first. So long story long, the answer is maybe but the chances your shop will try it are pretty slim and it would be more expensive than its worth.

Instead just buy black emblems from Toyota. Or DIY yours by stripping the chrome using the bleach method and give them a coat of adhesion promoter and spray paint.
