    Hi all,

I posted a few weeks ago about the wiring harness in my 2017 Tacoma melting at the plug for trailer brake controllers. After weeks of battling it out with Toyota and Horizon Global (maker of the Tekonsha P3) I was able to get Horizon Global to cover the nearly $6000 repair to my truck. So, I am curious to know if there are any of you out there who have a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport and have installed a Tekonsha P3 into your truck. Please let me know how installing this device has worked out for you if you're out there.

    Much appreciated,

    Steve

    awdvkd115,

That's exactly how I installed mine. Did you use the Tekonsha wiring harness and just do a plug and play connection? I think the harness pig tail is part 3017-P from Tekonsha. I still can't fathom how my wires melted. You'd think Toyota would have fuses in place for that. What's your fuse box arrangement look like? Got a picture of that?

Used the harness and the pigtail from above the kick panel. Only thing that I could figure is that a bare wire or a frayed hot wire made contact with a ground and created a direct short. Just my two cents.

    awdvkd115,

much appreciated. That's how I did it as well. Tekonsha came back to me and said they found a short in the part, and the ground wire was the one that melted on my truck. Just seems odd that a fuse didn't blow in that event...

    Question about your setup.

Does your controller stay on all the time? When I first plugged it in with the harness it was on, I'm used to the fact it doesn't come on until you start the vehicle.

Yes mine stays on all the time. It shows no trailer is attached.

I install mine yesterday using the factory plug in could have probably done in 20 minutes but I took extra time to tie strap everything in place. Programed per instructions and mounted it as shown in the video, no problems at this time. If wired correctly the controller goes into sleep mode after 15 minutes of non-use.

I have one of the cubby mounts for the p3 if anyone is interested, decided that I wanted to utilize that space for buttons.

Plug and play, worked great right out of the box.

    Hi All,
New member here but has been reading through these forums for many months now! I have a '17 TRD Sport that I am going to install the P3 controller as well and I like the look of this setup. I am prepping my truck in order to do some towing later this year if all goes well.

How did you mount the controller? Did you have to buy an insert to replace the coin holder pocket that was there?

    Hi LostHusker,
Can you show a pic of your setup as well?

    thanks,
    TRD_LB17

    I have a 2017 TRD off-road 4 by 4 double cab. The P3 is easy to install it's a plug-and-play installation
Remove the kick panel at your left foot and you will find the factory wiring harness there, then the panel underneath the steering wheel there are two screws down low remove them then pull on the panel and the clips will come undone. The controller fits right in that area so once you have it installed just run your wiring down to the factory harness use a couple of tie straps to button everything up and you're good to go.

PS: once you have the panel loose underneath the steering wheel there are four screws you will need to remove so the change holder comes right out.

    Too much.
I have a P3, the plug/play harness and the ESP mounting kit. I was going to install it all, then saw how far it was going to stick out and have decided to hold off.

    Thanks, Tacoma66 good info.

I am hoping I can get an insert to swap out the coin tray so I can get it recessed as much as possible.

Not sure if that would work the controller just fits the opening so it would be hard to recess it any more than what is shown in the picture. Remember you want to get it installed where you can activate the lever on the bottom of the controller quickly in case you get excessive sway back and forth on your trailer. The way I have it mounted works fine plenty of need room to get in and out so I would suggest installing it as shown in the picture.
