Yeah, i forgot to do that. Its an ongoing issue. I get too excited about building whatever it is, i dont think things the whole way through.

Here is a shot of the one side being glued up. Just plain 2x6 from home depot. Knocked off the rounded edges, ran each through the planer to get a smooth surface, and then glue.

 

I have one, although I use it primarily for metal work. It is decent. A bit under powered but for the price paid the performance per dollar value is pretty good. I am on my second, as the first one had a bearing that was noisy pretty quickly so I returned it. No problems with the second one to date.

There is also a youtube.com video out there that shows how to modify the pulley on the motor to a bigger pulley thereby increasing the speed of the sander. Here is the link:

I have not done the mod yet but I probably will before too long. There is another modification to the tool which takes care of the other biggest problem with the tool, changing the sanding belt. From the factory you have to remove a bunch of screws and it is a 5 minute task. With the modification it can be in less than a minute. Not that big of a deal if you are using the same grit or working with wood only but a big deal if you want to switch quickly. Here is a link to that video:

And if you do some surfing on youtube.com you can find quite a few other videos with various modifications to make the sander more functional.

 

I gave up on the big box stores and go to a couple different small lumber shops instead, they have a better selection of SYP. I think if I build another bench it’ll be a Morovian style.

 

Yeah, I don't buy my furniture lumber from the big boxes. But my bench, which will get abused, sure why not. Plus it's a lot cheaper than 8/4 maple.

I also didn't want to cry the first time I cut into it, or mis hit with a chisel and damage a beautiful workbench.

 

Good deal! I can source good yellow pine construction lumber but other than that the local stores only have 3/4” S4S hardwood, I have to mail order anything else.

 

Craigslist is a great source for lumber around here.

 

Theres an estate sale tomorrow Im going to check out, may be a bunch of junk but sometimes a good deal can be found. If I score anything worthwhile I'll post a pic.

byt no means am i a great wood worker... id love to be, but i just don't have all the tools. I did build my drawer system with a circular saw and a drill.

 

Mine have the guy whose last name I bought it from scratched into the metal at least one place on the machines...but since my name isnt anything close to it, and I have no receipts...it prob would look weird to people..

 

Reminds me of a story where I worked for a highway department one summer. We replaced a bunch of STOP signs and they just recycled them, so I asked if I could have one for my garage. They told me to write NOT STOLEN and the date on it, that is it!

 

We got a street sign for the road we live on at the dump about a month ago. When asked if we could have it the guy said I didn’t see anything and don’t put it out front.

 

What random orbit sanders do you guys use? I have a HF one that is almost done for and I want to get something with better dust collection.

 

well was trying to make a sled for some small cuts, but things fighting me at every turn. I cant do a straight rip cut because the fence is bent, I cant do a 90degree cut because the miter is looseand no way of adjustment... Or I should say the miter lock tightens down all the way but still flexes in the table groove. There is an adjuster but its backed up by a thin piece of metal that doesnt make a positive stop!

 

They all work fine. If you use the 1/4 sheet version... load multiple sheets in so you can just tear it off and use finer paper next
