Does wheel width have anything to do with skinny tires?

Currently running 17x9 wheels on 265/70 tires. I want to upgrade to 255/80 because I prefer the skinny look over the wider tire stance. Is my wheel width going to interfere with how skinny the tires will look?

Short answer: Yes , check what width wheel the tire manufacturer recommends as too wide of wheel may harm the sidewalls

I've checked the two tires i'm interested in. Both say they can work with a 9" wide wheel.

I'm just wondering if the 9" wide wheel will look as 'skinny' as say a 7.5" wide wheel mounted on 255s.

I'll give this post a read.

I think to the naked eye you won't see much of a difference but technically, yes, there is a difference. Specifically, for every 1/2-inch change in rim width (from the measuring rim width) the section with will either increase or decrease by approximately 2/10".

For example, X tire model in the LT255/80R-17 size has a 10.04" total section width when measured on a 7-inch wide wheel (I.E. Measuring rim width). Using the 2/10" rule, the section width should increase to 10.44" on a 9-inch wide wheel.
