That is indeed the WTF. There was a city here in VA that accidentally contaminated their own water supply by spilling fuel oil into the river at their water intakes. The water company had a limited reserve on hand, and as long as residents conserved water, they could likely resolve the situation and get back up and running without much interruption. As soon as the city provided this info to the public and asked citizens to conserve water as much as possible (providing instructions for doing so), they saw water useage increase 4 fold because people started filling bathtubs, buckets, and any containers they could get their hands on. Consequently the reserve was used up before the issue could be resolved and the city had to shut off the water supply for several days.

Many people just have a very hard time seeing the big picture.

Glad I live in Maine, but I still water my gardens with collected rainwater rather than pump it out of my well. When I build I'd like to design a large cistern for rainwater collection right into the foundation plans. I figure that way if we ever hit a prolonged dry stretch I'll at least be a little ahead of the curve. :notsure:

Where I grew up the houses that were built the from 1900 through 1930's it was VERY common to have a cistern in the basement. They fell by the wayside and most people abandoned them in place. Not sure on your intent but it might be cheaper to bury a vessel in the yard below the frost line so you can utilize the basement space?

I'd have it poured at the same time as the foundation, but not inside the foundation. On the South face, with one wall abutting the foundation wall, basically. I'm going to have a root cellar on the North face poured at the same time.

There is a difference between "prepper" and thinking ahead and being prepared. You split, stack, and dry firewood for next winter. You don't buy ten wood stoves and pack them with dry food and precious medals, then bury them. The fact that "protection" is more important than medical preparation on their pyramid is beyond me.

HA! That one actually hits kind of close to home... I've got two woodstoves and a pellet stove in the house, and two woodstoves and a propane stove in storage in the garage that I haven't gotten around to restoring/using yet :anonymous:

Fell through the ice on a lake in Alaska when I was a kid. That chit was cold. Didnt do much for me as a lesson. After we fished my bike out of the water, I was back riding on the ice the next week.

We love the Big Island of Hawaii and plan to move there eventually. On the East side of the island there isn't a lot of infrastructure - a majority of the houses don't have piped in water and rely on rain catchment and mostly septic tanks vs sewer lines. Rely only on rain for all your water needs!? Holy cow do they get a lot of rain. One area gets up to 23 feet per year!

Seriously, a great book for true preppers (not the "I'm gonna live on guns and ammo" type). Old book but really has great info.
