One of the features I miss from the 1996 4Runner is the emergency brake lever on the console. I found the console lever to be more convenient to use than the pedal under the dash. I even used the 4Runner console mod and updated the console to a 2000 style with the cup holders on the side.

Has anyone installed an emergency brake lever in the console of a second generation Tacoma?

Have you looked at a Hilux? It has a console emergency brake. http://www.trucktrend.com/features/consumer/163_1206_toyota_hilux_in_the_us/photo_05.html The truck in the photo is a 2011. Other parts of the truck look very similar to the Tacoma.

9/21 Still thinking about relocating the emergency brake lever to the console. The FJ has an emergency brake located on the console.

Just stopped for a look at the new 2017 Tacoma. It has a park bark in the center console. Price difference is to big, but a retrofit may be the answer, except the console box opens to the rear. Then there is the matter of all the new electronics.

You could get the parts from a manual transmission Tacoma and install them. But, be aware the mounting brackets on the firewall are not there. You will have to make your own and drill some holes to the firewall. The manual transmission parking brake mount is raised up off the firewall a little bit so there will be definitely some fabrication involved. I did it when I performed my manual trans and 4x4 conversion.
