    Hi All..

    Looking to upgrade my wheels/tires
There are so many out there.. that can’t make up my mind.. narrowed it down to this.
    What do you guys think?

    This
    Cooper Discoverer STT Pro All-Terrain

    On
FUEL D569 MACHINED BLACK VAPOR WHEEL

    On this 2017 TRD Sport.

Probably not lifting but not sure yet.. since I’m liking the 285 look on this trucks.
And eventually that ugly grill is going too.

    Thanks in advance.

It's a good tire for sure, but mud terrain. Cooper's ST MAXX is an aggressive all terrain you might want to look at, it's awesome on/off road with great wear. To fit 285's you will probably need a lift and need to trim, and do a cab mount chop. The wheels aren't bad, just not my style.

You will need a lift for 285’s, some people have gotten away without the CMC just have to have the right set up and specs on the alignment. Look at the ST Maxx, its popularity is rising.

i have the 265 stt pros cause they measure 31.5", no lift. ill post a photo tomorrow but they look sick. wind noise is noticeable but they are quite heavy so i lost about 1.5-2mpg. Truck felt gutless enough after that i forked out cash for the OVtune.

the tires are fucking awesome in the snow, and the mud but they pull on washboard if your going quick enough round the corners. They also run pretty high psi so the offroad ride is degraded. second pair i bought though, you cant beat that side wall.

Thanks for the reply.. and excuse the ignorance.. but I haven’t played with auto mechanics in a while.. so here are the questions..
How did the truck feel gutless? I know the tires would add a little weight.. but wouldn’t that just be like if you had 3 other people riding with you or taking some stuff on the bed? Most of my rides are by myself.. like go to work and back home.. yeah I have no life... lol..
The truck is like 90% street.. ocasional family camping.. like child safe park like stuff ... so I guess pretty much all pavement.. I’m just looking for the look.
And I guess 1.5 to 2 mpg wouldn’t be too bad.. I already only get 14 to 15 if I do all street.. and I usually do. The ocasional fwy drive will get me to 17 avg and that is it.
    Pics would be greatly appreciated..
If I do decide to go with the 285.. I will only do it if the shop that I’m going to consult.. can do it with a 3/1 lift.. without touching the cab mounting things..
if not.. than I’m staying where I’m at.

    Thanks again.

felt gutless cause of the constant downshifting and inability to maintain highway speeds and balance fuel economy. whats that in the way??? a 1% grade??? better drop two gears... its better now with the ovtune, if i had a manual it never would have been an issue for me. but they dont sell DBCB manual off-roads in canada...

The general consensus i've heard is that if your going 33s you should regear to 4.56. apparently it drives better than stock. its on my long list of mods after the 3" OME lift

I have the STT pros and really love the look of them. I have TRD Pro and still had to put a 2” level kit to fit my 285s to fit without rubbing..

I have read many complains about the downshifting issue here with different situations.. I personally haven’t had the issue after I got used to how the truck should be driven.. it took me about a year to finally get it. And it took the truck about 10 thousand miles to settle or learn my driving.. more like we learn each other . The way I see it.. this engine has to be driven somewhat in an agresive manner.. you can’t just go for a nice relaxed drive.. is either push that ECT button or finesse that gas pedal so the retarded mode (as I call it) doesn’t kick in before you hit 50 or 60 miles PH.
It was frustrating at the beginning.. almost to the point that I was thinking in trading it in for s tundra or even a ‘15 tacoma... but is all good now.

I got used to it too, I was at 30000km before I swapped tires. Then my wife got a 2003 limited v8 4runner and I realized exactly how retarded these trucks are in comparison. We shouldn't have had to "get used" to these POS transmissions. They should have been made properly in the first place. If you get 33's without regearing you'll be "getting used to" a whole new level of retarded. And it was 4.88 gears not 4.56 sorry, there's a thread trending right now. I honestly think it'll be my next mod.

I vote STT pro. So far, it’s the best rubber I’ve put on a Tacoma. It’ll be louder, but it’s worth it if you’re off road ever. The compound itself is awesome, I can’t remember the values but is has a high silica silane blend, and I have more confidence in these during the rain and snow than any other off road tire I’ve had on these trucks. The shoulders and sidewall are designed for airing down, and the puncture resistance seems to be at the top of the game. I have a 4cyl MANUAL, and when I sized up in these, I noticed a marginal change, I just had to adapt when I shift, there wasn’t a noticeable enough “power loss” to even miss what was on there before. Looks the part too. I was a BFG loyalist for awhile until I explored different brands after moving to a different climate, and this tire was my conclusion. I’m not a fan of those rims though, I actually don’t have anything against them but they don’t strike my fancy.

Do you plan on running your truck off road? If so the STT Pro’s are great, if not go with an AT. You’re going to lose a lot of mpg’s with the Pro’s since they are a mud tire and not an AT. I get between 15-16 mpg with the STT Pro’s. If you’re going up to a 17”wheel check out the Nitto Ridge Grappler.
