3 years ago (age 45) is when I started to have "difficulty" seeing those small flies & tying them on the tippet. Big dries & streamers were fine. At first I would just hold them a little further away, but then that made tying the knots a little more challenging. I first bought some cheap reading glasses (+1.00 3 pack for $10) and stashed them in vests, packs, etc. That worked ok, but taking off my polarized sunglasses each time to change flies became a pain. I often wear an old soft boonie hat and those clip on magnifiers don't work well with those and I don't like a lot of "stuff" on me in general. I finally sucked it up last year and purchased a pair of Costa Del Mar polarized fishing glasses with the reader section at the bottom (+1.50)...game changer! For low light & dark, I went to a local eye glasses shop and they had some cheap ($30) polycarbonate progressive (no lines) glasses with no prescription on top and various powers on the lower lense. I picked up a pair (again +1.50). I use those now at home for for tying up leaders, butt sections, etc.

Always want to be wearing eye protection, so now I'm covered.

I’m familiar with those. I rarely fish flies small enough to really need assistance. I just swapped out all my boxes as well. I’m down to two boxes that hold all my flies. I got tired of having 20 different boxes.

Will report back later today. Wife is taking the kid to basketball practice later, and I’m headed to the creek. I’ll probably get 2-3 hours in today.

No fishing, but got in some scouting. Found 5 or 6 locations on the Au Sable near Grayling Michigan.

Also picked up some trash. Fucking slobs that were there previous. I don't understand it. Why can't you haul out a you're trash?IMG_20180127_164814.jpg

It was still great to get out.

I got out for three hours yesterday. Managed to hook on nice brown, but he broke off.

I find it sad that every time I go fishing, I return with a vest full of garbage. The worst are those bait containers. Thanks for doing your part.

I remember the shop well. We would stop at the fly shop and go across the street and get a bowl of chili! That brings back memories.

Tbrom: It is a shame the Orvis shop is gone.....I think the big sign is still there. Used to be another excellent fly shop just outside Sandy Lake at the top of the hill near the Ag supply store. Was in the guy's garage. He was great and had really good prices, but he has been gone over 25 years I would bet. I think there is an Orvis shop on Oil Creek, at least there used to be one.

Have you been to Tionesta since the shops across from the Orvis place burned down?? Very different look to town now.

Got to get back to the cabin and do more fishing this year, hopefully starting in March.

Those freakin styrofoam worm cans (and bud light empties) are the reason lots of stream access gets posted

    Well, shit!

Was given a $25 eBay card for Xmas. Decided to gamble on one of the Chinese reels.

For less than $30 I am impressed with the quality, the feel and the smoothness of the drag.

Unfortunately, it's a right hand retrieve and it appears to be non switchable.

I don't think I will be sending it back to Fuking, China for a refund. I'll just use out for bass or some other non trout fish.

The thing came with backer, fly line, leader and 3 different tippets!IMG_20180130_195118.jpg

I really like this reel real was looking forward to abusing the shit out of it. I feel so stupid for not looking closer.

    Not quite.

I did go deeper into the add. It appears that the retrieve can be switched after all. Hopefully I can get it apart and switched. Disregard my previous rant.

I hope it is doable, I really like this reel.

    Standby...

Wow! That was easier than I thought!

I figured I was gonna need my needle noise players and a micro screwdriver to get it apart. I was able to take the spring clip out with a finger nail.

Take the clip out and flip the pawl around and the direction of retrieve is switched.

I was also able to get a good look at the cage berring as well. It looks decent for sub $30.IMG_20180130_204021.jpg IMG_20180130_204057.jpg

Quick vid on how I was able to spin it with one finger while filming with the other hand.

Yes I have been there several times since the Knotty Pine burned. The entire area has really changed. Several of the small runs that held natives are almost if not devoid of fish.

Little Tionesta used to have lots of natives.....usually less than 4-5", but you could catch the same one over and over on small dries in the late spring. Had some big ones too. buddy caught about an 11-12" one time several miles from the Allegheny River, so it might have been a native yet. Went there with a buddy who was just learning fly casting several years ago to 'coach' him....I didn't have a license that year. Had several opportunities, but he missed them all. Most of the little ones we fished possibly didn't even have names ecept for ones the locals gave them. There is one off of East Hickory Creek that early in my career, I was using minnows and caught a native brookie that was barely bigger than the minnow! Fly fishing on East Hickory one time caught a stream-bred brown trout about 3" long. Prettiest trout I ever caught!!!! Way before digital/instant cameras, unfortunately....didn't carry my DSLR on the streams!!!
