read on forum suggestion on 1st time use of chains on snow on trip to Tahoe. read very good suggestions on use and how to install chains. some says to install in front on 4x4, and some says to install in rear 4x4. reading my owners manual 2011 4x4 on page 212 section 2-5 Driving Information: it says Do Not install chains on front tires !!! Also it was suggested by nvdeserte that www.tirechain.com has great service; Lots of choices on that site...I am running on BFG Rugged Trails....and I am leaning on buying ONORD Diamond 4.5mm Boron Alloy Steel for rear axel only for my 4x4. Anyone out in TACO nation have used these chain (good/bad)? Any suggestions. I live at foothills of Sierras close to Sequoia NP...will use these chain if needed.

the best thing you could do for any snow and ice driving is get rid of those horrible dangerous Rugged Fails.... seriously i have never had a tire as shitty as a brand new rugged fail on snow and ice.

As far as chains on a 4x4 truck, preferably you put em in the front (where the weight is) but there just isnt enough clearance on our trucks to do so without risking ripping ABS wires, so rear only.

I like my security chain company Vbar chains, never had to use them but they are INSANELY beefy (actual chain links).... like stated 4x4, good tires, and some common sense and you will be good.

You would only need chains in R3 conditions and there isn't any of that forecasted for the next 15 days. You still need to carry them, they usually check in Tahoe.

V bar chains are great, but not on road. I've used them A LOT. On firm surfaces, you'll loose your kidneys.

OP, for your use get something rated for highways.

Correct. ONLY reason i got them is to get me unstuck or if i really need to pull on someone, and be legal if i am up in snow areas (you MUST carry chains even if 4x4 and snow tires). Any other time 4x4 and snow rated tires are more than plenty.... california doesnt usually allow people on the roads if conditions require more than 2wd + chains or 4x4 + snow rated tires..... if it gets to the point of needed 4x4 + chains as a minimum, they just shut the roads down.

I've never had them physically check that I'm carrying chains and I used to drive through the chain check daily. I do carry them though.
