Flywheel Help

Hey All,

I will be replacing my clutch on my 2010 2.7L 5 Speed within the next few months (been slipping real badly in 4th in particular) trucks got 160k on it so it just time. So I want to buy a Flywheel to go along with the new clutch, I know a lot of people have them resurfaced but for the money I’d rather just have a new one on hand and not have to worry about scheduling and being down for an extended period of time as I am attempting the job myself..

Problem I am having is, I have been searching and searching and it seems like most of what I find is either listed for the 4.0 or not in the model year range (2010). I guess I am paranoid I will order the wrong one and I’m not sure of compatibility.

Has anyone replaced there flywheel on the 2.7L second gen recently that can give me a solid model number to shoot for? Look for Aftermarket as OEM is like quadruple the price..

Oem flywheel is kinda expensive $320 2.7 2010 flywheel

 

Agree I don't really want to blow 300 plus on it. I can find things like LUK brand which are mixed review but there only 80 bucks, but then again I cant seem to pinpoint which one is for my truck as seems like every site gives me a different part # and questionable fitment. I don't want to spend a fortune. The clutch I bought was AISIN so just looking for similar quality for the flywheel.

 

Not sure why you're so concerned about getting it surfaced. I would not want to get rid of a factory Toyota part in favor of an unknown aftermarket piece. You can come home from work on a Thursday, pull the tranny and flywheel before bed time (especially with a helper), drop the flywheel off at a machine shop Friday morning for $60-$75, pick it up Friday afternoon, and have all weekend to reassemble at your leisure. It's even easier if your shop is open Saturdays or you don't work regular hours.

I just did a clutch on my 2.7 2 weeks ago and it went smoothly without a hitch, laborious but simple job.

Aisin CKT-065? That's what I just put in and I love it. Feels exactly like a new stock clutch should. Don't forget to buy new flywheel bolts ahead of time.

 

I am not ruling it out, I may end up going that route, but it also requires finding a shop around me that can do it, figuring out when they can do it and working that around when I have time to do the job as well it all has to be planned ahead of time. Vs just picking one up and not having to think about all that other stuff.. Then again, finding one has become a headache on its own at this point... I appreciate the advise. Something I will have to consider. Just want to make the process as smooth as possible as i really cant afford to have the vehicle down any more than it has to be..

 

Any machine shop can resurface a flywheel. Give a few a call and ask them how quickly they can have it done if you drop it off first thing in the morning. I used a shop in the Bay Area that's always busy and I dropped it off at 8 AM, no appointment, and they called me back to pick it up two hours later.

Where did u get the bolts for the flywheel?

 

Flywheel bolts are $30 for a set from LCE performance. If you go to the dealer they're $6 each and you need 10.

Search for a thread on these forums called "Better clutch for 2TR-FE" or something like that, page 2 or 3 of that thread has a nice write up with lots of tricks.

When all the bellhousing bolts are out and you're trying to pull the tranny off the engine, put a ratchet strap around the T-case housing and back to the rear axle (watch out for brake lines) and ratchet the transmission backwards towards the axle. By far the best way to pop it off.

Thread one of the bellhousing bolts back into the engine block and jam a socket between that bolt head and the flywheel teeth to easily unbolt/bolt up the flywheel without turning the engine over. You'll have to try jamming a few different socket sizes before you find the right one that does the job perfectly, mine was 1/2" drive that's all I remember.

Driveshafts are a pain. Do the rearmost first since that's the only thing you can't rotate without moving the vehicle. Reconnect your battery and do a song and dance of going into and out of 4HI so you can rotate the driveshafts so the bolts are accessible then lock them in place so you can remove the bolts. The truck will roll a bit when you torque on the driveshaft bolts so be careful that the brake is on and all wheels are chocked.

 

Just did my clutch in my 4.0 dont even think about buying a new fly wheel unless you want heavy duty or something good for like $500. Just get it resurfaced it takes 20 minutes. Also if you buy a OEM one for $300 you wont feel a difference between that and a $20 resurface.
