That looks legit and might just light a fire under my ass!

The only sales pitch I can give is that I am aiming to come in at 1/3 the cost.

ETA: I think I'll go try and run some right now so I can get some out for beta testing (actually have time tonight)

I got a handful run last night, just need to find some hardware. That being said, it’s not gonna be today as I’m home with a sick kid.

Nothing personal, I just work slow on small side projects like this. That being said I am getting ready to do a run after I test fit one on a friends ride (I have a 2nd gen.)

One of the down sides I have been dealing with since getting into my '17 Taco was the loss of a simple, sensible way to install an iOmount magnet to hold my cell phone, which I use for the mapping functions (mainly WAZE), when driving. While ProClips makes excellent non-obtrusive mounts for most vehicles, the one for the 2016+ Tacoma is just not practical.

I quickly found the Hondo Garage Unholey mount combined with a magnetic head, which solved the problem for me. The downside of course, is that I lost the full function of one of the A/C vents, which at certain times of the year is suboptimal to say the least. Hence, I have been continuously looking for a better option.

When I saw the first version of this mount, I was immediately intrigued. I had considered trying to mount something in this same area, but was concerned the plastic would not hold up under the weight.

So I was fortunate that @Lostsheep was kind enough to send me one of the in-dash universal mounts to try out.

The one he sent is 1/4" thick and professionally finished. Definitely more substantive than the one shown in the original post. In short, it is solid! It also more resembles a work of art than just a hunk of metal. Unfortunately, I didn't snap a picture of it in it's original state.

In anticipation of receiving the mount, I placed an order for two "iOwall" mounts. You can find them at the following link:

    https://www.iomounts.com/products/iowall

To accommodate the iOwall mount, I had to drill two 3/8" holes on either end. You can see the larger holes in the following photo.

    IMG_8727.jpg

As @Lostsheep has mentioned, you will need to drill a couple of holes into the trim to attach the mount. In my case, I drilled 4. Two holes on each end to pass the 3/8" x 1 1/2" bolt though to attach my iOwall mount, the other two for the hardware that @Lostsheep sent to secure the in-dash mount. I suggest drilling a small pilot hole in the trim before using the bigger bit. Here is a photo of the holes drilled into the trim.

    IMG_8726.jpg

From there I secured the in-dash mount to the trim. Note: using the iOwall mount had the added benefit of securing both ends of the in-dash mount with the bolts.

    IMG_8730.jpg

Here are a couple more shots:

    IMG_8728.jpg IMG_8729.jpg

And a couple of shots installed in the truck and with phones attached:

    IMG_8742.jpg IMG_8740.jpg IMG_8743.jpg IMG_0103.jpg IMG_0111.jpg

    Left for me to do:

    - Change out the silver nuts for black ones. Don't want @mesojdm to think that I am adding anything that resembles chrome.
    - Run a new lightning cord through the trim so I can get rid of the charging wire coming from the cig lighter.

Summary: In short, I am stoked with this change. It places the phone exactly where I want it, gives me back my A/C vent, and the in-dash mount looks like something that should have been installed at the factory. It also provides a good spot for my passenger to mount their phone (my wife and daughter have iOmounts in their vehicles). And, I still have room to drop a ram mount should I need to install something else in this space.

The sturdiness of this set up is beyond solid. I will give it a couple of weeks, but I don't foresee any issues based on how it feels now.

If @Lostsheep keeps producing these, I would definitely recommend considering this option for the various gadgets we all use.

    Feel free to drop questions.

Two more photos with the phones mounts in a normal reading position. I failed to mention, the iOmounts work via a magnet with a small piece of metal attached to the back of the phone with double sided tape. Further, the iCore can be adjusted freely over the ball of the iOwall mount to tilt the phone in any direction you like.

Looks great, and nice write-up. Two questions. . .
    - How difficult is it to remove the dash trim? It looks like it's just held on with clips.
    - It looks like the mount is attached from the underside of the dash trim, with nothing visible on top, correct? I don't see any hardware on top of the mount other than that holding the iOmounts.

looks real good. that hondo/scochse combo or whatever is a little crazy for me (need the vent in NTX!!), but i like what you did. i basically did the same thing short-cut style. i may go permanent if i can find a good reason... only running a single phone right now.

    1. Very easy. See post #94 on this thread. She can example in a much hotter and concise manner.

    2. The intent is to mount it from the bottom. You will notice in my third picture there are two bolts holding the mount in the middle. It makes for a clean mount. Depending on what you decide to attach on top, one or two more of these might be a good idea for extra stability.

The downside of the Hondo mount is the inability to move the vent around. The scochse magnet didn't take anything further away from that. I chose that route as I don't want big arms and clamps sticking out when I am not using the mount. In addition, I am lazy and don't like putting the phone into a contraption when I can simple "stick" it to the magnet.

Lastly, I put the second mount in for longer trips as my wife and daughter both have iOmounts in their cars. Becomes a simple place to store their phones. NOTE: The iOcore magnetic comes off when not in use, further reducing the profile.

Thanks. I saw the bolts in the bottom, but I don't see them protruding from the top, which prompted the question. Do the mounting bolts thread into dedicated holes that don't go all the way through the mount?

Will be nice when these are available... clean sleek option if you don't really want to have everything stuck on permanently. I'll definitely be buying one!
