hi. Longtime lurker (lots of great info on here), and finally registered as a member and taking delivery of my first tacoma over the next week. Coming from an f150.

I’m trying to decide on a tonneau (no wait, I did try searching!) and my question is whether anyone switches back and forth between a fold a cover g4 and a softopper. I’m thinking for summer trips I may need greater volume that the softopper would provide. But as far as I can tell looking at installation instructions, I think I’d need to completely remove all the hardware for each and reinstall everything each time I switched. Which is leading me to think an extang solid fold may be the better way to go for me. Although I like the g4 features more it seems it takes a bit to get everything lined up based on descriptions on here. I currently have a solid fold on my f150 and have been satisfied with it and really easy to take on and off.

Or is the takedown and reinstallation not that big a deal? Any experience with the g4 and softopper specifically would be great.

I've actually had the extang 2.0. It was ok. I hated that I needed to fold it up to reach shit all the way forward and it seemed to leak. I purchased a softopper and love it! I can crawl in the back and unload firewood and seems to keep everything dry. It's easy to operate and feel overall a great product.

I gave away my solidfold for free, well I got a bottle of vodka for it.

I have a Truxedo Truxport and a Bestop. It does take removing all the hardware and swapping it out. It just takes time but it's not too bad. I don't switch it often though.

I bought my soft topper today. Took about 5 minutes to completely remove softopper from his truck then 15 to install it on mine. Now when i had a bakflip mx4 it was way harder and i definitly wouldnt want to switch back and forth. I didnt like my backflip it sat too low and i couldnt even fit tall ice chests. But the cover ur looking at may sit above the truck sode railing mine sat flush. It is possible but think of storage of the one your not using. Its a very hard decision i finally said forget it and made a choice.

I've had the G4 on my Tacoma for about 2 years now and like it a lot, it's fairly easy to remove the cover and reinstall it as long as the main mounting hardware can remain in place. If you have to remove the G4 main mounting hardware to get the soft cover installed then it will be like a fresh install and that can take some time to get everything lined up correctly. I'm sure it's like anything, the more you do it the easier it is.
