How did dsm do u wrong?

Are 5125 valved different than 5100s or just longer?

The dreaded axle wrap. Mine was so bad after I bought my truck, everytime I would let off the brakes at I light, I felt like I was being rear ended. Its god awful, and never has anything to do with the driveshaft, because if it thumps and you fill the grease zerk on the driveshaft with grease until you cant put more in, it goes completely away. It does this because it will act like a damper when the slip shaft is full of grease, acting the same as a spring clamp. I kept filling the zerk until I got good new leafs but then I realized I bent the driveshaft after the new leafs were installed. The driveshaft was taking shock from the axle wrap, and so was my pinion. Now I have a custom 1 piece driveshaft, and I am now geared for 33's and have deaver leafs. Moral of the story is to properly fix the sagging old leaves before it bankrupts you with more parts. I like the traction bar but if you're leafs are bad the traction bar is not the real fix unless you run very soft leafs on purpose for a cadillac ride, if you take that traction bar off it will still wrap up. They make airbags that would stop the thud too!, made for towing, they bolt right on between the frame and springs, then you could run the factory springs for a longer time. Best bet buy new leafs.

 

Anybody have experience with these? I was thinking of picking them up. I mean my truck has add-a-leafs and I still feel the wrap. I know they aren't exactly off road bulletproof etc... however, I figure for a daily driver better than nothing eh?

Dude, that just might do it. But I feel that it needs to be welded onto the axle housing itself

 

I got ya, however, I want to keep my truck as stock as possible. No welding/cutting holes etc. That's why I don't have any armor or winch or anything. I know lame but, I may give it a chance and see how it goes. Worst case I just take the thing off.

 

Not lame, mine looks stock too. For now. I'm just trying to fix certain issues and be ready for a camper.

 

So I just got around to installing the whole helper set, and I also had my truck raised while installing them. I did forget to take a measurement for a before and after compare. I think with the truck lifted, there may be a 1/2" or so of raise. Not the purpose of the install, but damn, I'm quite pleased with the end results. I also removed the front sway-bar, so that boat rocking action was live and well. Until I threw these on. It's almost like sway bars for the rear.. I like it, am impressed, and feel it keeps the tires pasted to the road, whit less roll. No axle wrap. And now to get the feel offroading.... Thanks everyone, Bros of the Taco for all input...

Great write up. For the price, this is worth a try. I have axle wrap. Though my OEM springs still have a Mona Lisa grin instead of a frown. I tried a couple of shots of grease. I didn't want to put in too much grease and cause other problems.

 

That setup will hit your frame as the picture shows the OEM bump removed and this in it's place. Also, that pic is not a Tacoma from what I can tell.
Go with the BudBuilt unit.

 

It works. I installed these springs and eliminated wheel hop/axle wrap. It will now do a (short) burnout without shaking my dentures loose.

A little bit of a thread revival, but boy am I glad I finally found this info.
Bought a kit at Advance Auto. Installed a tad over 5" from axle. Torqued
to 50#. Immediate difference on my 99. Affordable, if not temporary,
solution. If I had more $, I'd add new springs, etc.

Still holding up okay? I think I'm going to go this route to because my clunking is getting worse.

 

I'm gonna have to give it a firm "meh". Yes it did work nicely for a number of weeks, but after I spent some time underside scraping, brushing, and Ospho-ing the frame I realized the leafs were in more of a frown shape than a smile. So I think I'm going to have to replace the springs ultimately. The past day or two I've felt the wrap shudder more than usual.

 

I remedied my axle wrap and 65 mph vibrations with an Add-A-Leaf and a shim for my original leafs.

 

I did mine like more than a decade ago.

Hasn't made my truck explode yet.

But I'd also give it a solid "meh". My springs are also just straight up worn out, not that this clamp thing has anything to do with that, but I'm in need of new springs.
