So I have had my 2015 dc for over a year now. I'm sick and tired of bottoming out the rear suspension on the dranage ditches in the streets of LA. I can drive over them with my cars without bottoming. Yet this truck bottoms out on the bump stop every time when I encounter these types of situations. I'm not ready for a lift just yet. What would be a cost-effective way to solve this issue or is this simply the way it is?
    Thanx

Get a new set of oem leaf packs. And new shocks for the back. Find someone with take offs from a 3rd gen tacoma. Everything will bolt right up and it will be cheaper than buying from the dealer as well.

I have low profile bump stops. Could be a solution.

How much weight is in the bed when experiencing this? If none, then your rear shocks are more than likely done for. Test them to make sure they are properly functioning. If you are hauling constant weight that tests the trucks limits, then you should look into getting better suspension to help out. Softer bump stops work much better as well if you want to get rid of the loud and sudden stock bump stops.

I only have 3 small tool boxes in the bed with just me in the truck. Maybe 100lbs in the bed. I got the truck at 31k and now has 55k. So I have a hard time thinking anything is worn out. More like a poor design. I've been looking at new springs at $500 or add a leaf for $100 or Shackles. As the truck seems to visually sag a bit.

I've been thinking of a flip kit. So maybe it's worth waiting to do the whole kit at the same time.

Gotcha. Progressive bump stops would make the thuds not at harsh. But ultimately, yes by poor design and quality, you should look into getting rid of those stock leafs since they are sagging.

Sure you not hitting just the overloads? Had same problem but with more weight in back didn't hit like with less weight .Was noticing with say 3 , 40 pack cases of water over same bumps didn't hit hard . I normally have about 1-150 lbs of stuffs in bed all the time . How far is leaf pack away from overloads?

Good question. I will have to measure that. That sounds more like the issue.

Having gone through this myself here is what I have found. With the stock off-road suspension (2 leaves plus overload) I had 3" between the bump stop and frame with no cap and nothing in the bed other than the oem bed mat and a roll up tonneu cover.Ground to fender flare distance was 36" It bottomed out hard over a railroad crossing with driver and 3 passengers (600 lbs) and about 160 lbs of luggage in the bed . If I sat on the open tailgate it sagged noticeably and I weigh 150 lbs. I changed to used 3 leaf springs from a 2015 with the three leaf progressive add a leaf last spring and overload removed. No more problems. The distance from ground to fender flare is not more than 37 1/2". Ride is nice with the used 5100's that I got in the deal. I had a 90 lb anvil right back near the tailgate recently along with about 60 lbs of extra gear. You could feel the rear firm up as the add a leaf came into play but not unpleasant at all. If you don't haul heavy ,continuously, I would consider this option. This set up seems to allow full occasional use of the truck up to its GVW . I tried the Helwig EZ500 helper springs but they felt like they would catapult the rear end when empty and it still sagged badly with a mid range load in the back. I found them harsh unloaded when snugged up enough to do any good at all loaded.

If you are bottoming out with 100lbs in the bed, your rear suspension is trashed.
The previous owner could have overloaded the truck for an extended period.

It doesn’t take much to flatten the stock leaf pack.

The most cost effective fix is just to do your lift with a full dakar pack and new shocks.

Anything else will just be a waste if you plan on lifting and replacing later.

Also go to Toyota... see if they will fix under warranty. You have a warranty so use it!

I've got '16 leaf packs with Icon AAL's and '16 TRD O/R rear shocks in Arizona if you're nearby.
