Aside from the obvious Chevy Colorado bashing that Toyota is doing here, I feel the need to mention Toyota's shift away from advertising Crawl Control to advertising Multi Terrain Select. The off road world sees Crawl Control as a joke and I think Toyota is just now realizing this...

Lol Toyota should take it easy with the "authentic 4x4" when advertising the GoPro mount.

Aside from any perceptions regarding crawl control, hardly anyone uses it. I tried it once and was like "oh, so that's how it works" and have never touched it since.

How does the off-road community think crawl control is a joke? I’ve used it to get unstuck in my brothers old t4r pro, and it’s legit lol

    Funny commercial though

Crawl Control is excellent tool for its intended uses such as getting unstuck. I guess some uneducated people could see it as a Jurassic Park Ford Explorer dinosaur tour guide crawling along the trail

Who cares what the off road world thinks - crawl control does wonders and when you wheel alone it is a life saver. It is confidence inspiring in my opinion. Whatever floats your boat, but as far as I am concerned shit talkers are just that..and they typically drive jeeps. LOL

I bet most if not 85% or more 4wd owners would be better off when stuck with the crawl control . We are not all rock crawler competitors .

So this is a really interesting topic; much like the topic of the Porsche PDK automatic vs manual transmission. Nobody will argue at the PDK isn’t a beautiful piece of machinery and spanks ass over the manual and other slush boxes. Porsche was geared to go ‘all in’ on PDK and just do away with manuals in their top end cars. But the enthusiast crowd complained, said “we don’t care that the manual is slower.... we want it because we drive our cars. We want the engagement, even at the cost of 0.4 seconds in the 0-60. Or 3.5 seconds on the ‘ring.”

Similar here too, crawl control is likely superior in some situations. But there’s a large off road contingent that just wants the engagement. They don’t want computers doing it for them. For them, the fun is the challenge and journey, not the destination. For others, the destination is important and if it takes electronics to get them there.... then so be it.

Crawl control isn't available on MT so if you're stuck with an AT TRD Off road, tried different a-trac settings and everything else aside winching, what's the harm with using crawl control? Happened to me and pulled myself out of a very steep hill climb while stuck on some tree roots.

I thought I was the coolest kid on the block when we installed a CDROM drive for the first time on a 486. 3D graphics!

If I'm paying $200K+ for a sports car, or even a fraction of that really...I want to be able to throw around the gear lever like a maniacal 2 year old.

Although the whole launch control thing is pretty sweet...just don't use it at a crosswalk like I did. :anonymous::burnrubber::D

This is how I feel. But I'd wager the raw increase in performance is much greater between a PDK and an MT than Crawl+MTS vs A-TRAC. I think in 99% of cases when people say "crawl saved me" a competent driver could have gotten the truck unstuck without crawl. No offense, just is what it is.

I laughed at crawl control until I needed it. It works excellent as a Hill descent control. It is extremely useful when the right situation arises, so it is just a “tool in the toolbox”.

I think Toyota maybe didn’t advertise all of the things crawl control can do, choosing to focus on trucks unsticking thenselves from sand.

I would say “uninformed” wheelers who have not needed Crawl Control think it’s a joke. Experienced wheelers know it has a time and place where it can make a difference, so why not have it? It uses existing brake and throttle components to work, so the only extra “gear” is the knob that sets the speed and some software code.

I'm not arguing for one over the other... I'm simply agreeing that 'to each their own'. MTS and CC have their places, just not in everyone's vehicle. Personally, I'll take the electronic tools since I don't HAVE to use them, but have them as backup. Of course, the MT complicates things because there's incompatibilities.

As for the prior mentioned PDK... I just gotta comment that those transmissions are near telepathic. When I get frisky with the gas and brake pedal, or hard turns, it just knows what gear it should be in. For example, if I'm cruising along at 60 mph and 1400 rpm and hit the brakes aggressively and pull onto an off-ramp, it'll drop several gears and run the rpm up to 3-4k. It'll hold that rpm for a little bit waiting to see what I do next. If I do nothing, it'll go back to normal. If I gas or brake, it'll respond appropriately and keep the engine in the power band. I can shift manually with the paddles, but I'm not sure I can choose the most appropriate gear at any given time. I can pick what I think is the right gear, but that's simply based on my experience, gut, butt-dyno, and ears. The collection of which could be wrong.

I bring up the above story to simply show another instance where properly programmed computers can really add to the performance of a vehicle. It makes the vehicle perform better. Does it take away some of the engagement? Yes. But at the same time it increases my ability with the car. Same with MTS and CC. If a relative novice can use the tools to accomplish more, and get out of trouble, then it's done its job for them. Experienced wheelers can simply forget the tools are there.

Agreed, rowing through the gears is a 'motorhead' thing. Wife doesn't get it. Well, not true... she does get it, but now it just gives her a headache. She loved it way back when. I probably wouldn't do it on a daily driver these days. But a weekender? Sure. Unless of course a manual got the veto from the Mrs. and that was the deciding factor... I could 'live' with a pdk in my 2 door if I had to. :)

As it is, I do love it in my 4 door commuter. I've been building up the case for a manual Boxter for some time. If I have to give in and get a pdk Cayman..... darn. :)

Still a great time regardless. An acquaintance let me drive his McLaren 720 around the block awhile back (when the crosswalk incident may or may not have happened), and it was still pants soiling levels of fun!
