What is the deal with fixed top camping rigs?

I'm too sissy these days for canvas. I used to be all proud of myself roughing it, now I'm all about warmth and comfort. Igloo cooler? F that, I have a giant fridge/freezer LP powered in the trailer.

Sleeping in longjohns in a sleeping bag? F that, I have a furnace and an inside bathroom.

 

That is my next step, but probably have to wait until retirement to actually use it and not watch it sit...as I am too damn busy with work it seems, worked 6 days a week for about 8 months last year...and I am self employed my boss can be such a dick! Only got out 3 times last year. My neighbor across the street has a nice trailer he bought 1.5 years ago...think I saw it leave the driveway twice so far.

 

Don't buy one, just borrow your neighbor's!

Me and the neighbors have a trailer competition going on, every time I buy a trailer the neighbor tries to top it, and vice-versa. I think I'm ahead right now.

 

He liked my Wildernest when I brought it home, but he has a DCSB...so it wouldn't work on his truck even if he was able to find one, told him about FlipPacs and the AT Habitat, but he didn't want to pay that much, plus he has 2 kids. He did buy a super small popup with intentions of converting it to an off-road camper...think he used it twice...apparently the wife didn't like it...an 18(?) footer showed up one day.

My father provided me the best advise anyone can with regards to boat ownership.

Son, he said, boats are nothing more than a hole in the water, into which you throw money. The larger the boat, the larger hole, and ultimately the more money you will throw in. So, buy yourself a case of beer, and go find a friend who has a boat. Bring your case of beer and go for a ride on a boat.

I apply the same logic to RVs and campers.

 

I do like the idea of the rooftop campers...like a treehouse of sorts. Pretty cool.
I dont camp enough to justify it. But the biggest deal breaker for me is getting up in the middle of the night to take a piss...no doubt having to put on shoes to go up and down that ladder.

 

To me being a long term backpacker, rtt's are too expensive, take quite awhile to deploy. Plus I see is, ability to camp on rocky or muddy ground. Watched one guy take over an hour to set his up, maybe he hadnt used it much.

Unzip cover, flip over, loosen clamping strap/clips, half deploy ladder, pull down ladder and pull tent open, set vestibule hoop, put in two stakes. ~fin

 

He wasn't in a hurry, but I thought it still took awhile. Opened up his windows and the expandable part.

Sounds like a bitch. Some of them seems like a lot of fussing...some of those OZ campers and tents look like a Rube Goldberg machine.



I complain about my Wildernest, and it only takes me 2 minutes to do. While super easy to setup, but it never fails...get everything all setup, then you have to use the truck for something. I may move to a trailer next.

Liking a RTT on an enclosed trailer idea.

 

Bladder bucket!

Just keep an old juice container in your tent with you. The RTT's are tall enough inside to stand on your knees and piss into the container. Screw the cap back on, set aside, and go back to sleep. You almost don't even have to fully wake up, or turn on a light to do it. In the morning, dispose of your nightly drainage into the bushes, rinse and put back in the tent.

 

What would make that even more fun would be a hole in the roof of trailer and floor of tent you could travel back n forth through

 

Expense is relative to the buyer only. I've seen backpackers use $15 titanium spoons and sleep in $500 sleeping bags.
Everyone chooses their equipment for their own needs (although occasionally just to impress the onlookers).

 

RTT's are dirt bag status compared to those RV Expedition Vehicles.
