Just now performed my oil change and new oil filter swap for my 25000 service. While tightening back my drain plug I went abit snug and stripped the oil pan thread (or it had prior damage and I finished what was started). Anyhow, Rethreaded it and put a new size oil plug in. Should I leave as is or buy a new pan and next time put back as original? thoughts?

If it's ok since you rethreaded it and doesn't leak then I would not bother putting a new pan on.

If you got an oversized plug in and no leaks, just leave it. Should be fine.

    Might I recommend a Fumoto Valve? :D

Unknown lift, maybe 2" I don't know how to ID it, and would rather set it back to stock.
I suppose it's a case of how good you feel about it. If you over drilled the hole of the old bung, and re-threaded with a proper tap, then it should be good. Though the only time I had to do this it was on a pan that was already off, I have heard of using a tap with the flutes packed with grease to catch the metal shavings if rethreading is done with the pan still installed so that little metal frags don't get sucked around your engine and will stick to the grease instead.

If you just chased the original threads, or the new plug was a "self-tapping" plug, I'd consider it a bit sketchy and at your next convenience I'd put on that new little pan piece. I replaced the pan on my (I'm second owner) '16 since it was damaged by the PO. It was a real booger getting it off since that Toyota FIPG stuff is really something. I used RTV putting the new pan on, no issues with it so far. I believe the new pan was about $176 though, so it's not cheap for such a small and simple part.

Lesson learned, I would put in a new drain pan an install a Fumoto drain valve. Best thing since lite beer.

For my '16, the sub-pan part number was 12102-0P030, but they specifically asked for my VIN to make sure it was the correct part for my Truck. It lists at $230 retail, but I can get wholesale discounts fortunately. It totaled out at $173.57 I suppose the price of that little piece of stamped sheet metal will play a role in the ultimate decisions around replacing it. Not really a tough job, just takes a ton of time getting the residual FIPG off of the aluminum main pan.

Likely you'd be able to find this online and perhaps save some money on the cost. Stick w OEM though.

Appreciate the info-I will more than likely switch it out but for now I'll see how it goes. Mechanic at work helped with the threading so I know it was done correctly. Just more money than I'd like to spend on a mess up at the moment. Oem is definitely something I value, too.

They have which made me wonder. Toyota care blows, all the suggested maintenance practices aren't covered. I'm sure it doesn't matter now bringing it up to them cause it was rethreaded.

You're probably accurate in this assessment.

if you had it serviced before I'd say they did it OP, just saying... :D
No need to replace the pan, this is a common everyday occurrence with many solutions so no need to loose any sleep over it.

Don't feel bad, you live and learn

Toyota care does blow! My brother has had one issue after another with the skid plates bolts being stripped and busted off. Other brother the same deal. It’s all about doing it on the cheap and fast. The customer is dumb as #$@% so who cares! Scary as #$@%. Makes me think about doing it myself vs. them screwin it up!

It's not just Toyota, is most every major franchise out there that pays under a commission basis. If you want quality, you need to find a reputable and conscientious independent shop.

I agree. First thing I did was pass on those "Free" services. I enjoy working on my own vehicles.

My BMW had a hollow drain plug at the shaft that was weakened at the neck. So in case of overtoquing the screw head would shear off and not damage the pan thread. I wonder if there are such aftermarket bolts for our Tacos. Will need to look into.
