You did that trail in a 2wd ?

I wa swatching some videos and it looked a little tricky in a 4runner

Was wondering how a tacoma would do.

I made it to the 2nd squeeze spot, was with a group of Tundras. My truck made it through just fine. Some boulders you kind of climb over, but the Tundras didn't want to go through. We were like 80% through the trail I think.

I haven't done in in a few years but when I went I think they had just ended the trail at the really tricky part because the rains had changed it so much that it was too narrow. I don't remember needing 4wd anywhere, though.

WTF that looks so different from what I did. I think I went in like 2013 or something, so they must've gotten a whole bunch of rain to flood that place. I do remember the first two obstacles in that video, the one between a rock and the canyon wall and the ledge that you drive around, but they were nowhere near as gnarly. I probably used low 4 just for the low range, not because I needed 4wd.

This is at the end of fish creek wash between the exit of Diablo drop-off and the exit of pinyon drop-off, right?

I did this trail last year and a cave in caused one small hurdle then another with a series of boulders to go over that definitely require 4wd. But this canyon changes regularly and gets very tecnical the farther up you go, until you have to turnaround and so it in reverse, which is nice

Edit just watched that vid, the first section a 2wd w lockers could push its way through easy, the second one w the large boulder on the passenger side would be the gatekeeper i spoke of.

Damn! It also sounds like they opened it up or the "Trail Ends" sign was torn out because the end of the trail when I went had plenty of room to turn around. That was just before the canyon gets really narrow, at about 3 mins into the 4runner video. Guess I gotta go back!

Indeed, it changes a lot! Right after I took my new Tacoma up there to the end, an earthquake blocked the canyon. Good thing I wasn't in there at that moment!

March 2010, Sandstone Canyon off of Split Mountain/Fish Creek, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Also the side road to Diablo Dropoff:

As someone with a post 2012 4WD Tacoma, can you do a test to help answer some questions? In H4, doing a hill climb or any low-traction condition, can you compare TRAC (no VSC button push) vs. TRAC OFF (quick button push)? Can you climb or travel easier in one over the other?

It has been my contention that TRAC OFF (quick button press) is the stronger traction control with the engine regulation off. TRAC has engine regulation, thus less power to move ahead if tires spin, as it is in H2. In H2 the quick press is TRAC OFF and AUTO LSD on. The same quick press in H4 should provide the same, stronger traction control. It just doesn't have a light that says AUTO LSD... only TRAC OFF.

Before 2012, there was no quick press, the standard mode in H4 was with the engine regulation off, but they hadn't given it a new name or a light, until 2012+.

Any other post 2011 (2nd Gen) 4WD Tacomas can share their findings too. It seems that the 3rd Gen Tacomas have had this feature reversed or changed as they are experiencing no strong traction control of the spin in TRAC OFF???

Thank you for participating in this lab experiment!
