A different blower motor/resistor issue

I've been having the common intermittent issue where my A/C blower fails to run at any speed. I read as many threads as I could find here, took the blower motor and resistor out, and ran into a couple of surprises.

First, the connectors in the pigtail assembly were perfectly fine -- they looked brand new. Then, when I pulled the resistor out, I found it was NOT the factory ceramic one, so it was probably changed by the original owner (my Tacoma is a 2012 and I bought it in 2015). And finally, I pulled the blower motor out and noticed it's an aftermarket model. I'm guessing the pigtail part was also replaced when the other two parts were.

The motor is noisy so I'll be replacing it, and the resistor looks like it might have burned out. Hopefully that's all that's needed to fix it. I'm not surprised that it's failing again...but I am pretty shocked to find the pigtail connector in perfect shape. Anyone else had the same experience?

 

Made an account specifically for this issue. I am having very similar problems. Started with the dreaded squeak from the blower motor. Now it only works on the high setting. I have read every single post and no one has a perfectly fine connector and (relatively) fine resistor (all have the common burn mark). Removed the motor and cleaned it. Got a fair amount of dust and metal filings out which did stop the noise (for all of about 4 minutes of use). Now I'm back to square one. On the verge of replacing everything- motor, resistor and pigtail connector. Have you been able to resolve your issue?

^^ something I would like to avoid if possible lol. Sounds like the issue persists, in time, for others even after replacement of all of the above. A permanent fix would be greatly appreciated *cough*cough* toyota..

 

I replaced the resistor and blower motor right after my original post, and haven't had a problem since. I went with aftermarket parts in hopes that they won't fail like the OEM ones. I didn't replace the pigtail, since mine wasn't bad.

You know there are two pigtails that get burned right?

That connector and the resistor connector are both known for getting burned terminals.

I just went thru this a few weeks back on my 2012. Fan switch work on higher settings for a time, then stop working. Change the resistor (connector was fine)and work fine for two days then stopped working again. Did some research on heater problems and blower motor problems. Did a test by banging/tapping the bottom of the blower motor and checking the connector ( connector was fine) . Started the truck, turn the heat on and worked. Would run for a while then stop again. Installed a new blower and every thing has been running perfect.

I also checked the 2 relays and fuse under hood before changing the resistor. They where fine.

 

Both connectors and all wires show no signs of burns from shorting. I will definitely try the updated resistor as mine is the old green style. I took the blower motor out, removing the cap on the back to access internals. Removed a fair amount of fine metal/carbon dust (just with simple canned air duster). I just don't know what to look for to determine if the motor is junk.

As I mentioned I had the squeak that often plagues the blower motors in the tacoma. I put up with this for several days before it moved on to a grinding, then quitting on all but high fan settings.

I have wiggled all connectors with no results, checked fuses. I'm guessing both new Blower and resistor, as I have noise issues as well as the fan speed . Would I be correct to assume the old resistor connector will plug into the updated resistor?

Looks like I’ve just joined the club, motor is a little noisy and doesn’t work on the lowest setting.

Rockauto has a TYC that is cheaper than T1A-87103-04040 on Amazon. Anybody have any issues with quality on these motors?

 

have not had any problems after installing the T1A, I went with this one after checking reviews in a few places.

 

Nice, do you guys recommend just replacing all of the components, or go piece by piece?

 

I first just replaced the resistor then the blower motor. On a later model I think its better to just change both at the same time. Resistor problem can carry over to the blower motor and vise versa from some of my researching.

 

I replaced the resistor before i noticed the bad wire at the resistor plug. Found a kit at Auto zone that included both the replacement plug and resistor with heat shrink crimp butt splices
Haven't had a problem since.
