Yeah this truck gets terrible gas mileage driving anything over 70.

When I do my 15 mile 40 mph commute to work, 29ish MPG

Jeez, you wanna talk about anxious. Mat just sent my upload files, if I didn't have a couple rush jobs to get out here at work, I'd say I think my flu is coming back & go home to upgrade my Taco ECU. :)

Do a search...plenty of people are doing this with Apples (assuming you have one of these) running VM software to run a Windows box...I even think there are some instructions on setting it up on here somewhere....or if you don't have an Apple just buy one of these...

That scares me a little when flashing the ECU, not sure why, but if something does go wonky... there goes the truck lol.

I actually have been looking at a windows machine for a while now, this just gives me extra motivation to find one. Alss, I figured if I was going to spend some money on one, I want a decent machine to last a few years and not just for flashing the ECU.

Since it was brought up, is anyone using a a Apple laptop running a VM with windows? If so, can you share your thoughts?

This is what I did and it has worked just fine. I just created a small Virtual Box for the Windows 10 Insider Edition and I use it exclusively for flashing and nothing else. And best of all, it was completely free... Takes some work up front and some tinkering sometimes to get it to recognize the USB devices but it DOES work :)

I have had a couple of issues with the VM recognizing the USB device but once you sort it out it worked fine for me.

I am running an old version of VMware fusion, at the top of the window for the VM is virtual machine, click that and one of the options is USB and if you go to that it has a list of devices to connect and the dongle was in there. That is how I have gotten mine to work.

Matt stated that the software has protection against this type of thing. You should be able to flash without ever wondering if the ECU will brick.

He’s also said if somehow it did brick, you could send it to him and he’ll take care of it.

unless you take a hammer to the ECU, you cannot brick it.

I had to plug in my dongle and Tactrix and from the setup for the VM you've set up, you go to Ports, make sure USB is enabled and set to USB 2.0, then hit the + icon to add your devices which should show as something similar to the top two in my list below. I had some weirdness with the order they were in on this list and the way it worked for me was to ensure the Tactrix was 1st then the dongle 2nd (ignore the other 2 as those are for thumb drives I added).

Do this with your VM shut down just from the VirtualBox console, then save these settings and fire it back up and it should recognize (still need to download drivers and install per the directions once you're in Windows.)
