From what I've gathered over the last couple of years of MPG threads (so nothing scientific), the OR seems to get far worse mileage than the Sport.

What trim do you have? Not an OR?

It can vary greatly depending on how you drive it. Set cruise at 55 or 65 and it should get awesome mileage.... I could get 24mpg over a whole tank in combined driving, in stock form if I milked it.

If you accelerate rapidly all the time, or if you drive much over 70mph, it'll hurt your mileage. Drive it like paw paw and keep your speed down, the mileage will hit the numbers.

Right - I wasn't getting into possible reasons why. I was just pointing out that from what I've gathered, the OR's seem to get markedly worse mileage than Sports (or SR5's).

Almost any time there is a thread complaining about MPG, it's an OR. lol

I have an SR5 that is getting 16.5 mpg with this winter mix. I do have 265/75/16 Open Country All-Terrains on my truck. I keep seeing all these 18+ and I really wanna know how..

I mean, I have AT tires, live in a hilly area, and have stop lights at almost every intersection, and I still routinely get 20+ MPG around town (not freeway).

I think a lot of it is just how the truck is driven, because I can certainly get bad mileage too, if I'm not careful.

i think I could squeeze 30 out of mine on a flat road with no headwind by getting it to drop into 6th , then drop down to as low as it will stay in 6th , maybe 35 to 40 mph lol. I would have to drive 35 miles to get to a flat road though ,lol.
Edit - with summer blend fuel .

Man, I live in a relatively flat area. And I swear I don't accelerate too fast. I'm really not that aggressive of a driver. I feel like to get 20+ you're not allowed to punch the gas EVER and everyone will go around you off the line cause you're trying to keep your RPMs below 2k and end up driving like elderly person.

I'm not sure lol. I guess it's probably just really easy to completely destroy your mileage if you're slightly too aggressive.

Mine is stock. 13k Miles and one year of ownership and I get 20-21mpg every single tank. Only once did it drop down to 19.5 but it was 0-10 degrees outside and I had to use 4wd to get out and about a couple days.

If I were the Toyota head engineer in charge of fuel economy goals . I would have a a guy search this board and Fuely etc. to find the trucks that are said to get outstanding fuel mileage as compared to the average. I would then offer to buy those trucks after a test to confirm their results . Toyota could offer a huge premium to the owners or give them all new trucks of their choice or whatever it takes . I would then do an extensive study on the overachieving trucks and find out why they do so well . It could then be applied to all the trucks , and or all of the vehicles they make ! There has to be reasons there are trucks that preform so much better than the rest .The answers are out there !

The answer is very simple: Driving habits. give five people five identical vehicles and let them drive five identical loops of 100 miles and nobody will have the same mpg.
    Toyota can't design for that.

You'll see it improve as the engine breaks in and when we get summer fuel back to the pumps. I get 22-24 in the summer on flat highway at 60. (2016 auto OR and 25,000 miles.)

I agree with that statement 100%. The problem is it cannot explain the trucks stated to get 24 to 28mpg or more doing 75 to 80mph for a hundred or so mile trip etc. No matter how much I hyper mile mine , anything over 70 mph and mileage drops to 16 to 17 mpg or so. my truck is stock with a cab high shell .
There have been many over the last few years here I have seen to claim the great mileage and I see no reason for them all to lie .
