Questions about butyl tape

So I am wanting to finish my sound deadening and have to still do my doors. I have some sound deadening I would like to apply to the doors over the cdl tiles. My issue is the temperatures, I have some nice adhesive but it wants to be over 40 degrees for 24 hour cure time, and I might not be able to keep it at that temperature. I also would like it to be somewhat removable if I need to get in there for the future.

This lead me to thinking about butyl tape, I can heat it up and get it sticky then get the deadening hung. BUT, will a good butyl tape hold the weight? I would think it would but wanted to check, I am thinking it will probably be 3-5lbs of weight to hold and I would put the tape all along the outside of it, maybe a strip in the middle...

Any tips, advice etc....or even tape/adhesive recommendations

 

What are you hanging - MLV? Even a good butyl will have trouble hanging on to it and it will be a total bitch when you need to remove it. Use good velcro if this is what you're doing. If I'm buying it, this is what I buy. I get lots of good velcro from Mid Atlantic that ships with their rack trays that appears to be close to the same stuff - free for me.

 

I have a MLV type product that also has some foam on one side, so it is a little heavy. I think you are right about the velcro being the way to go. The product you linked looks a lot like the low-profile industrial velcro I found on Amazon. Do you think there is much difference? Just easier for me to order on Amazon. They both are velcro brand, and it works from -30 to 120 degrees, so I would think that would cover me.

Cool, thanks for the advice. It's going to let me finish up a lot faster than I had planned, and Velcro is better than adhesive in the long term anyways!

 

Yeah, it's the perfect material for this. I've needed to remove my MLV a few times and the velcro makes it nice & easy.

Doesn't take much either. This is easily enough to hold 2 layers of 1/16" neoprene sandwiching a single layer of 1 lb/sq ft MLV. It's kinda heavy & the velcro doesn't blink. It works especially well in this application as it's only attached to the MLV & sits more or less flush with the neoprene.



I like the way you think though with the butyl. I've been experimenting with doing what you mentioned.







It works for the most part upside down, but I think it would slide down on a door. The MLV on my hatch covers held for about a year then fell off. I stuck them back on many months ago and they're still there, but they will come down over time. Maybe I could prep the MLV better - rough up the surface and clean it well. That would help. Moral of the story though is that it will migrate if holding something heavy at a steep angle. It's cold now, but when it warms up so goes the viscosity

 

Thanks for all those pictures, I think for sure the velcro looks like it works better, and you use less of it. My velcro should be coming in tomorrow or Thursday, so I'll put it to the test this week!

edit: I am guessing that first piece is a picture of your back/sub area, how does that fit with the seat coverings is there plenty of room? I want to put some on the back wall, but have only CDL tiles now, I wasn't sure if the other stuff would fit back there, but a lot of road noise comes from that area.

 

No, the first picture is a door. I also only have CLD tiles on the back wall.
