    Hello TW,

I have recently purchased a used 2014 Entune radio (and matching bezel, vents etc) to update my 2006 TRD Sport to at least semi-modern functionality.

I know the common solution to the tech issue is to replace and go aftermarket. That is great for features and whatnot, but also opens you up to theft of the HU or if you want to sell it later.

I am attempting a complete OEM head unit rebuild. First I am going to start by finding/ drawing the complete schematic for the base 2014 HU (model 86140-04130). If the embedded system is one that I can find documentation to re-flash or create a custom firmware, awesome! If not, I am going to redesign better internals.

A lot of work you say? Yeah, absolutely. But I've got to keep that semi-OEM look going, and I am a current BSEE junior, so I can count all of this work towards a project-based course requirement :)

If anyone out there is crazy like me and has attempted or is willing to attempt this, please drop me a PM! I'd love to talk tech about this truck. So many ideas!!

    -Nick

I'm nearly positive the Entunes can't be reflashed with any custom firmwares...only startup images, and navigation map updates.

With that said- there's plenty of aftermarket radios that can look damn factory (or better, IMO). I currently have a Kenwood DDX9702S and it looks 1000x better in the dash than the ugly OEM unit did, and it has a bigger screen. Not to mention Android Auto, as well as gauge displays via the Maestro RR. Theft isn't a concern like it used to be back in the day. If you're worried about resale, then just save the factory radio and trim ring? That's what I've always done...

But, if you're dead set on trying to polish a turd of a headunit- kudos to you! It's going to be a lot of effort that might not pay off- but hey, that's what life is about right? Try new shit and see what works or not.
