yeah, WalMart is sight during August. they push pallets of supplies to the front of the store...water, cheap ice chests, tents, etc...for all the people flying in. I did that myself, but I rented my big stuff (bike, tent, cookware, air mattress, etc) from a Reno burner who started a little cottage industry for just that. between renting from him and shipping a couple of crates ahead for pickup at UPS i was able to fly there without any excess baggage fees.

totally sucks that people abandon so many bikes and crap after the burn. my camp usually has 20+ bikes left out from from visitors (not from our members). we split them up, take them home and clean them up for women's shelters and other causes.

Haha. Glad you can take the piss out of it. It’s the worst when people can’t have a chuckle at the absurdity of the event as well.

absolutely gotta laugh at yourself and it all. my wife was totally supportive of me going, but she got REAL tired of me talking about it all the time. one of my best friends is in the same situation, and he's been TWENTY times (without his wife). i asked her how she copes and she sighed heavily, put down her knitting and said "i'm officially the best wife ever."

here is another bit of humor about it all....

NO WAY! was that the monday after the burn? over my Illumination Village? if so, that's me on the far left in the black shirt! that was a great night, and has sorta become a tradition for those staying late to help strike.

Major jelly here! Are you camped right next to your plane? (Hey, if we both go next year, could I get a ride? I've always wanted to see it from the air. I've heard about "the list" but also know you need to get there at the asscrack of dawn to have any hope of getting a ride that day). Two years ago our camp founder (also named Kirk!) scored a ride on this vintage bird....loved it.....

Its so funny to hear people's misconceptions about BM "so everyone's on drugs right?" "ORGY!" "just a buncha hippies dancing to music" (there's not even a music lineup)

I know just as many people that are dead sober the whole time as fizzed out of their minds. The two biggest burners I know, the ones who introduced me to it a decade ago are a multi-millionaire doctor couple from Rancho Santa Fe that I met through church. They're in their 60s and have never done drugs in their lives, they're so into they actually have "afterburner" events in SoCal.

But in reality there is NOTHING like experiencing BM, its not like a music festival (even the big ones). I haven't been recently and heard its become a little more "commercialized", which is expected with something so popular. But I've known so many people from all walks of life have the experience of a lifetime there. I can't think of a single person that's went and not had a borderline life changing experience, ESPECIALLY if you don't do drugs or go to festivals. My friend's dad went last year and he's a conservative Republican from Laguna Niguel.... time of his life.

I know its still not for everyone, but if you have even the slightest curiosity you should really do some research, talk to some people that went, and seriously consider going yourself. Doesn't matter if you've never been to a festival, doesn't matter if you hate music, don't do drugs, doesn't matter if you're an introvert, poor, rich, or just an asshole. I think 95% of people on this planet would benefit from the experience.

AAHH, the AIR COUPE! I was camped right next to him, we flew a bunch of days together. Oh, I'm trying to remember my camp neighbor's name...oh well. You can see my plane with the EZ-UP next to it and the Air Coupe just beyond in this poor phone shot of the ramp. I love camping outside of the trash fence! We'll be in touch as time grows nearer for BM 2018.

For those of you interested in going to Burning Man but can't because of timing or distance or whatever, I suggest seeking out your regional networks. There are a lot of 2-3 day events that you can attend the throughout the year. It's a great way to get a taste of the main event and meet a lot of really great people.

It'll be fifteen years for me this year. A lot's changed, a lot hasn't.

    It's hot and dusty. Don't go ;-)

My first Taco at the burn (13 Burns, 4 Juplayas), the dust never goes away:

Back in the 90's, Burning Man was shooting guns, blowing stuff up, art, some raves and general chaos.

Today it's a bikram yoga, new-agey, nouveau riche-techie, superstar DJ, narcissist celebrity, unshaven armpit-hair fest. Yuck.

    Rave on, Burners! :brianr:
