I just bought a (new to me) '08 double cab taco that has a kenwood ddx372bt installed from previous owner that came with a license plate backup camera. Previous owner never installed it and gave it to me. I just installed the camera yesterday, tying the wires it into the reverse lights, running it down the frame and up into the back up the head unit. I was pretty tickled with myself for completing it as I'm an electrical novice.

Using the stock photo below as reference this is what's going on. I assumed that when you slipped the truck into reverse it would automatically cut to the back up camera screen no matter what screen the head unit was on at the time even if it was on the main menu screen like below. It only switches to the backup camera when I hold the AV (r-cam) button on the left. I'm assuming I've tied into the reverse lights correctly as the monitor goes back to black after switching out of reverse. Wondering if anyone here has any knowledge of this unit and maybe that's just how this unit is. Seems silly to have to press the AV button every time I back up to see my backup camera.

Did you connect the reverse input on the back of the radio to the reverse lights (or similar input) to switch the display when you go into reverse? When I’ve installed a camera in the past I’ve tapped into the reverse wire to power the camera and to send the signal to radio to switch to the camera. There should also be a wire under the dash too.

If you’ve down that already, go under setup and there should be options related to the camera.

I know I did the reverse input correct behind the radio, but I need to check the other end of that cable that should tie into the reverse lights. I tied the RCA video cable into the tail lights but don’t think I did the reverse input on the taillight end correctly.

A few mods here and there and counting....
I believe there is a setting on the head unit regarding the back up camera. Go through the setup menu and fiddle with it. Saw it on a youtube channel about kenwood double din headunits.
