Found this write up very helpful. Good job, and thanks!

I replaced the factory plugs at 106,000 miles and it has made a noticeable difference.
Before replacing, my combined mpg over the last 400 miles was 19.4...
Since replacing, driving the same daily commute, i'm getting 21.6 mpg over the last 200+ mi
2nd and 3rd gear have seemed more powerful as well (I could be imagining it..)

The old plugs looked, well, old:

I'm probably way overthinking this, manual calls for 1.1mm gap. Just got some NGK Iridium plugs which came gapped at 1mm.

Should I bother adjusting them or just leave at 1mm?

It's a difference of 0.004". Given how fine/pointed the Iridium tip is, I'd be more worried about breaking it trying to adjust the gap than a 4-thousandth of an inch difference.

The one at the top is one of the original plugs pulled at 90K. The rest were just pulled at 131K. When i bought them, there were two options of denso. I grabbed the wrongs ones (IKH20). They worked ok, but i don't think they last as long. Developed a little bit of a stumble lately so i went ahead and swapped em. Hopefully that cures it. Went back to the factory Denso SK20HR11 plugs that it came from the factory with. The interesting thing to me is how much further the tip extends out on the SK20HR11 plugs.

seems the ones i just pulled have a bit more carbon build up on them well.

I just replaced my plugs last weekend @ 108k (assuming original plugs but they were NGK so not sure). I don’t have a lot of experience working on engines so I don’t have a good feel for when the engine is having trouble. That said, since I bought the truck @ 103k it has had a random backfire on ignition and occasionally when reving it. I thought I would start with plugs and go from there.

Good news/bad news is new plugs made a world of a difference. It’s not that the truck feels more powerful, it just feels as strong as it should be. It’s running smooth and reliable now and I see just how bad it was getting. Hopefully, no damage was done from waiting so long to change them.

Changing them was fairly easy. If you are in this thread because you think it’s time, stop thinking and do it!

Nice truck! Your's is the first one I've seen that is the exact same configuration as mine in Timberland mica! I always wondered if there were more out there..

On a different note, does anyone in here know what the part number is for the spark plugs that came in these from the factory? Id like to change mine coming up, but am having trouble finding the right ones..

There are a few different spark plugs that it could be. Look in the back of the owner's manual. They're listed there. When I did mine I found that some part numbers listed in the manual are obsolete and replaced by new part numbers.

Just changed mine out this weekend. 2.7 with about 58k. Pulled the stock Denso SK20HR11 out, and replaced with NGK LFR6AIX-11. I tried to find the stock ones locally, but ended up with these. Anybody else try these before? I used this great writeup, and anti seize and dielectric grease. Didn't adjust gap cause scared of damaging the tip.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but truck seems like its lost a bit of power?? Not filled up tank yet so I haven't checked my mileage now. Just curious yall's thoughts on these particular NGKs. Thanks.

What’s even funnier about this is i’ve been watching your build thread for a while because of the similarities of our trucks. I just mentioned it to my wife last night because I was asking her how she liked the look of the ARB bumper. Not only do we have very similar configurations but I also bought a White shell and painted it (I went Black though).

As for the plugs, the ones I removed (presumably the originals) are NGK ILFR6T11. The new plugs I picked up from the local Toyota dealer are Denso SK20HR11.

I bought mine from the dealer (same part as what you removed) so the gap was already adjusted. These were a bit more expensive than what I saw online but I wanted the peace of mind knowing I got the right ones. Spark plugs are one of the few things I would highly recommend going to the dealer for despite the higher cost.

Edit: as I mentioned in my original post in this thread I felt my power was restored so it was well worth it!

I used the Haynes manual as my main reference and it gave me the wrong part number. When I went to order the wrong ones Amazon tried to tell me they wouldn’t fit but I decided to trust the Haynes manual instead. That’s when a friend told me spark plugs are one of the thing you should just get at the dealer, and i’m glad I took that advice.

What are the odds of that? :D

The closest truck ive see that was similar to mine on here was a TM access cab 5spd 4x4 so ive been keeping an eye out for one just like mine:fistbump:

ARB is hard to beat imo, but i love the look of them. I need to pull mine off and paint it black again.. i tried color matching it a while back and it doesnt match 100% so it bothers the hell outta me lol. And yeah painting the shell was one of the first things i did to it after i got mine. I couldnt stand how tacky the white looked on dark green. Black definitely looks good though with such a dark color and all the black trim on our trucks

Thanks a million for the part number! I ordered those earlier this morning based on the sk20hr11 numbers i saw in this thread, but having the true # will make it easier when searching for them in the future. Im definitely adding it to the list of #s for reference that i have in my build

Glad I could help with that part number! I just noticed too that you are in Texas. Car fax says mine was originally from the Houston area and most of the service records are from a dealer in League City. It only made it out to California after the 2nd owner sold it.

The White shell on TM was horrendous looking! My wife was constantly making jokes about how only ‘old man trucks’ have such poorly mismatched shells. I could only laugh and say it was the Smurf look with it’s White cap. I’m really happy with the way the Black parts match with the TM body. I never liked the 2nd gen Tacomas until I saw this one and I quickly fell in love with it’s look. It’s my first truck and i’ve been loving it since I saw it.

Very interesting.. whenever my dad initially bought the truck, the dealer told him there were only two in the state of TX in that color and configuration. The salesman drove up to dallas to pick it up and brought it back to the houston area for him. I guess you got the other one if he wasnt bs’ing.. although it does seem like a rare combo..

I definitely agree that the white looks terrible lol.. i searched for 6-8 months for a color matched one and then i eventually picked up the white one and decided id match it myself. Sure enough after i bought it, the next week there was a color matched one for sale in austin:bananadead:

Black definitely goes well with this color. Hell most people think its black or grey until it gets out in the sun since its so dark. Mine was my first truck too, definitely a great first car:D

I used the same NGK plug when I did mine this past summer. I didn't adjust the gap either because I didn't want to risk messing up the tip.

I didn't bother checking the PN of the plug that I pulled, though they were NGK plugs. 58k miles is way to early to be changing Iridium plugs. The factory change interval is 120k miles.

Ah. You are correct sir. I was looking in the maintenance manual and saw 60k. I did not see that it was for the v6. I don't suppose there is any harm in changing them early? My truck is ready for the diff oils to be changed, and things greased and all that. I put in a new battery, too, as the stock one was 6 years old and grodey. I guess I just jumped the gun and went into full tilt maintenance mode.
