Hi all. I'm new here -- I just bought a 2010 Taco AccessCab 4.0 TRD-offroad. Truck seems to be solid, but I noticed that something was once mounted in the engine bay that's no longer there. I can see rust/marks where something was fastened to the passenger side wheel well. I don't know what was supposed to be there and was hoping someone could identify it for me. I looked up engine compartment pics of gen2s and see that some had an ABS unit there, but I think all of my ABS components are on the master cylinder.

Here's the master cylinder and it looks like it has ABS integrated (I think?):

    Thanks for any help!

Mine is a 14 and I just went out to take a look. I do have something located there which looks to be associated with the brakes as it has 4 hard lines going into it. I didn't take the phone for pics or follow the lines out. Bump to hopefully get you answers.

Thanks for doing that, Ridgeline. Your description sounds like what I've seen in some pics of later years. When I first saw those pics I thought for sure I was missing the ABS system (like the previous owner had done a delete/bypass or something), but judging by the amount of electronics mounted on the side of my master cylinder and the size of the MC, I'm kinda thinking on my year the ABS system was different. So I'm kinda stumped. I'd be curious if your MC looks like mine in the pic if you get a chance. Thanks again

Edit: I think this pic is from a 2015. I'm guessing yours looks like this on the passenger side and the master cylinder is narrow like the pic

You have an off-road so I do know your master is different than mine on a sport. Mine is just like your pic above from a 15.

That has to be your ABS actuator mounted to the MC due to having four lines. If he did a bypass he'd most likely just have a front/rear output going to two splitters. I guess if you want to run ABS that's the way to do it. Much cleaner than having the actuator on the opposite side of the bay. Never seen anyone post that style on here before.

I believe the difference's in the ABS modules has something to do with the package you have on your truck (Sport, Off Road). The TRD Off Road came with A-Track and Hill Decent Control. Both I believe are controled through the brakes. The TRD Sport didn't come with A-Track or Hill Decent (my 13' Sport didn't). I believe the TRD Off Road had the "Fancy Electric" ABS/Master Cylinder control module thingy. The TRD Sport got the "old school" vaccum operated master cylinder and remote ABS module.

Maybe the original owner had a two battery setup or an air compressor mounted in that spot since it was open? Hard to know what was there before. I doubt it was an ABS module if you have the TRD OR package.

Thanks all for your responses. You may be right, BEE-ROCK. I would have just concluded that before posting if those mounting locations were not oem-looking.

The really rusty hole in the pic looks like it's a factory-threaded and reinforced mounting point (not just a hole drilled by an owner).

The tri-bolt bracket (which looks like is used to mount the ABS on other models) is factory. If it didn't have markings indicating that nuts had once been on those bolts, I'd have just shrugged it off. Just seems odd to me.

Of course the previous owner could have just smartly taken advantage of these mounting points for some aftermarket item using matched nuts/bolts.

Anyway, I guess it's not that unusual, but since I bought it from a dealership, I wanted to make sure they didn't sell me something that was missing anything important (don't want to find out a year later and not be able to go back to them because it's been too long). Already had an issue with trying to get them to fix a malfunction two days after I bought it -- their solution was to just remove the part and not replace it...

I totally understand the concern! When I bought my Tacoma, the dealership thought I was a nutcase. I had a flashlight and was shining it down the oil fill tube (Good way to tell if the PO changed the oil enough, also for head gasket failure). I pulled up some interior trim panels and was poking around under the carpet to see if it was flooded. I don't trust dealership mechanics or "Certified Pre-owned". Used to work for a dealership, I've seen some of the taticts they try to pull.

Funny coincidence, the saleslady who sold me the truck just called me to follow up and "see how you love your new truck"! LOL She got an earfull
