Personal property tax. Kansas taxes anything mobile that you have to register with them.

Or were you just being naughty?

I've got a pair of cousins in San Diego. Beautiful place, but I'd probably have to turn tricks to afford to live there.

? You damn right im mad. I guess my post wasn't clear enough for you. People that grew up here and bought when it was cheap or inherited off their parents are probably fine. Recent transplants like me are fucked. And my salary would be VERY comfortable in other states.

If you have a house congratulations, just don't get upset when we bitch for legitimate reasons.

YOU put yourself there, YOU decided to live and work there. YOU are responsible. So you have no reason or excuse to bitch. Be an adult and take responsibility for your actions.

You're damn right it's my fault for moving here. I was fresh out of college and wanted to try something new, and I didn't realize how insane it was. It's also good for my career, since I'm a software engineer. I'll still bitch and moan thank you very much. Even in the past 3 years since I graduated it's gotten worse. Why don't you come over for a year and see for yourself ;)

    Workin progress...
Mine actually went down... how I have no idea. Maybe because my truck turned 10 years old? Either way it beats paying $100 more than what I paid last year.

I recently moved from Florida to Los Angeles county, California. Last month, I got my CA drivers license and transferred my registration from FL to CA for my 2017 Tacoma which was purchased in December 2016.

    I paid:
    • $50 SMOG test before going to DMV
    • $35 driver license at DMV
    • $422 truck registration at DMV
They originally wanted around $600 for the truck registration.

I was able to get the price down to $422 by:
    • Showing them my ARE camper shell during the inspection (changed from commercial pickup registration to automotive/passenger pickup w/ camper permanently mounted registration, lowers registration cost, removes weight certificate requirement) - see p. 13-4 here
    • Clarifying purchase price of the Tacoma using the cash sale price (before sales tax, TT&L fees, financing interest fees, etc) which also lowered registration cost - see p. 2 here
It took ~4 hours even with an appointment due to how slow the process is. I also had to discuss with a Manager to get his concurrence since most employees were unaware of the camper rule and what dollar value to use for the registration so it was quite the hassle. A little more painful than my $47/year registration in Florida but I'm not complaining since I knew of all of the increased costs and what I was getting myself into when I moved here.

I really appreciate the info, but to be rather blunt, it's not worth the fight with CA for the minimal savings. Whatever I could gain in monetary savings, I lose more than twice that in taking time off from work to deal with this to argue with them and many folks are in the same boat. Maybe not x2 the loss like me, but still going upside down to get it. The state legislature knows this and takes advantage of it to wriggle more money out of our pockets and I'll stop here before I go on a tirade and get myself into trouble.

Liberals are the problem here. We all better repeal the gas tax.....especially if your here complaining...vote in November, repeal the gas taxes that liberals instituted on us without our permission.

The several hours I spent there weren’t due to me trying to fight them, I should have clarified. I agree it’s likely not worth the time and effort. The whole process took like four hours just because they are painfully slow and there’s so many hoops to go through. There was an hour+ wait just for the inspections. This was all with an appointment. Had to go from one station to another and then another etc etc all with their own wait time.

I just wanted to point out the camper shell policy for anyone not aware of it along with what dollar value to use when filling out the registration form. A lot of the DMV people except the Manager had the wrong information which is why I was going to be overcharged.

Ah, thanks for clarifying. I took me just over 6 hours to pay the DMV $35 to take a new photo for my new license this year. Once my number was called to pay them and get the photo, I was done in 30 minutes... So, I know the pain.
