I live in Colorado and own 2011 sport 4.0. Yesterday I went to the dealership to buy an 2018 off road with premium package an all the bells and whistles. At first sight I loved the truck. The interior was top of the line. The way the dash looked light years ahead of the competion. Sweet sliding windows nice sun roof beautiful touch screen. So I dropped my phone on the auto charge mat thinking sweet let’s see this.... nothing happened it only works on android or iPhone X or if you have a special case. Whatever that’s cool they have 5 USB ports plus lighter sockets. Then came the test drive. Steering felt good but engine was quick to get to 5000 rpms. Every time it changed gears it was way higher then my old truck. Next I tried to drive it up 170 into the mountains. Going up past red rocks the truck struggled to stay in the fast lane either reving up to 5000 rpms or bogging out. It changed gears literally 27 times in a mile stretch with no load just me and my gf. My gf looks over and says this is miserable! That was the deciding factor. I got this truck to take to the mountains and it shifts and bounces you back and forth worse then my 91 Pontiac sunbird le.Lol! I’ve got a topper big ass tires and my truck mobs up the mountain 2000 rpms never shifting unless I drop the pedal but then I get kicked back with torc! 4.0 all day! After driving that pos Prius engine I’d give 40k for my 4.0 if I owned the 2018 but the other way around never. I feel bad for anyone who owns a 3rd gen and had never driven the 2nd. Underpowered is an understatement. Ext power mode is a joke. I’ve never been more sad I really want to love the truck but the new gen is crap. Anyone happy with theres must live on flat planet. People talk about wind slowing there car down making it shift more lol! My 2nd gen rips up hill with a headwind. I hope everyone complains and they give us engine options.

    I like my 3rd gen... And I'm coming from a 1500 GMC V8...lol

Its hard to understand the new characteristics... But it makes sense to me..

All the tools you need to make it do what you want are within arms reach... Utilize them..

    Maybe try a Colarado?

Have an 2005 4.0 Acesscab in our family with a topper and my 2016 Manual Transmition shits all over it in the mountains and climbing. I haven't driven a 3rd gen automatic so I guess I'll take you word for it? :notsure:

Truck was an auto so I bet the Manuel is better. But when I’m driving home from snowboarding and I’m tired, the Manuels a pain in the ass in traffic in the Moutains. I won’t do it.

Good for you doing a proper test drive, one less whiner to complain about buying the wrong truck. I owned all 3 generations, agree with you truck being a little underpowered. Put a 6 speed automatic in your 4.0 and it would be worse. My next one will be a manual, but the automatic isn't bad either. Would have been about perfect with the 4.30 gears in the automatic.

You say you own and enjoy your 2nd Gen but, rather than posting about your own truck, you decided to make an account on this forum to complain at length about a truck you don't own? o_O
