2017 SR5 4X4 Build/Maintenance

Hello everyone,

I created this thread to be able to track the progress of my Tacoma with upgrades and maintenance.

I purchased my Tacoma out of San Antonio, Texas back in June 2017. It is a Silver Sky Metallic SR5 with the 3.5l V6, automatic transmission and tow package.

The day after purchase




First purchase, floor mats since my truck did not come with any...



Back seat hammock to protect the seats from my dogs


Lluminar Pinnacle 30 window tint for the doors and rear glass. Lluminar Clear film for the windshield


Picked up 5 oil filters on Amazon for $25. Metal oil filter canister to replace the plastic canister. Plus a rubber wheel to remove decal adhesive


First fill up! Yes I let the gas cap dangle. lol


After breaking in the engine with 1,000 miles, took a road trip to AZ. Changed the oil at 1,932 and had to get an alignment since the vehicle started pulling 200 miles before reaching Phoenix. Then drove to Mississipi, putting 5k miles on the Tacoma.

 

Removed all the emblems from the truck


Swapped out the interior lights to cool white LEDs as well as reverse lights and license plate lights


Xenon Depot 5k HIDs and Morimoto XB LED 5.5k Fog Lights

URD SPEC-U Exhaust


Leer 100xr Bed Cap with sliding front glass, 50/50 windows with pet screens, and headliner. Swapped BFG KO2s for Nitto Terra Grappler G2 in standard load


I ran 12v power from the battery to the rear of the truck bed. I made this diagram in Photoshop to help with the electrical wiring

 

Completed maintenance today now that I hit 20k miles. Here is a step by step guide.


Engine Oil

Remove skid plate to access oil filter by removing 4 12mm bolts


Remove 14mm drain bolt from oil pan to drain the oil


Allow oil to drain


Remove oil filter drain cover with a 3/8" extension


Use a 5/8" ID tube and secure it over the oil filter drain adapter


Allow filter oil to drain out of the tube

Fill with

$52 0W-20 oil Toyota/ exxon mobil Case of 6 Quarts Full Synthetic TGMO SN 0W-20 Oil

0W-20 oil Toyota part # 00279-0WQTE-01 or GF-5 equivalent. 6.1qts oil capacity without tow package and 6.2qts with tow package


Run engine to circulate oil. Shut off engine, remove and wipe oil dipstick, allow 5 minutes before checking oil level



Front Differential

Remove 10mm Hex fill plug first followed by 10mm hex drain plug


Drain front differential gear oil


Front differential drain plug with new copper flat gasket part #

Reinstall drain plug, and add 1.6qts of Toyota part #

Reinstall fill plug once filling differential is complete

 

Rear Differential

Remove 24mm fill plug first followed by 24mm drain plug


Drain rear differential gear oil


Fill plug and drain plug with new steel crush washers part #

Reinstall drain plug, and add 3.1-4.2 qts of Toyota part #

*Check manual for identification of rear differential and gear oil capacity*


Transfer Gear Oil

-Remove 24mm fill plug first followed by 24mm drain plug
-Allow transfer gear oil to drain
-Install aluminum flat gasket part # 90430-A0003 on drain and fill plug
-Reinstall drain plug
-Fill transfer case with 1.1 qts of Toyota part #

Transmission Fluid Check

There is a large thread about 3rd Gen Tacomas rolling out the factory 1-2 qts short on transmission fluid. I have created the following steps to show how to check transmission fluid without TechStream or any other OBD2 software.

Locate the transmission fill plug on the passenger side of the transmission


Here is a better view. It will have "WS" on the bolt head


I pumped 1qt of Toyota part #

$79 00289-ATFWS Automatic Transmission Fluid, 192 Ounces, 6 Pack

00289-ATFWS and reinstalled the fill plug


-With the vehicle off, stick a paper clip together in the OBD2 connector port #4 and #13.
-Top row from left to right #1-8.
-Bottom row from left to right #9-16.
-Press and hold the brake pedal and turn the engine on.
-If you did this correctly, you will see indicator lights blinking on the tach when you turn the engine on.


-Move shifter from P to S slowly and from S back to P
-Move shifter back and forth between N and D at an interval of less than 1.5 seconds
-You have entered the "Automatic Transmission Fluid Temperature Detection Mode" when the D indicator remains illuminated for more than 2 seconds
-Move the shifter from N to P
-Release brake pedal
-Remove the paper clip
-Allow the engine to idle to raise transmission fluid temperature
-The D indicator will come on again when the transmission temperature has reached 95° F
-The D indicator will blink when the temperature is above 113° F
-The temperature range to check the transmission fluid is between 95°-113° F


-Once the D indicator illuminates, remove the 5mm hex fluid check plug, allow fluid to drain to a drip. Once the fluid is at a drip, reinstall 5mm hex check plug, turn the engine off, fluid check is complete
-If the D indicator starts blinking, you are out of fluid adjustment range, reinstall check plug and turn the engine off, allow transmission to cool and reattempt once the fluid is below 95° F



Grease Propeller Shaft

Pre June/July 2016 4X4 Tacomas will have 5 zerk fittings for the driveshaft (propeller shaft) u-joints. 2 zerk fittings for the front and 3 for the rear. Post June/July 2016 4x4 Tacomas will only have 2 zerk fittings located in the front driveshaft. The rear driveshaft is now a sealed unit. 2WD do not have zerk fittings as they are a sealed unit. My Tacoma is a 2017 and will only have 2 zerk fittings.

Front driveshaft zerk fitting. Turn driveshaft by hand to the 7 o'clock position for easier access


Connect grease gun to zerk fitting and fill cavity until new colored grease is purged from all bearing seals


Remove 2 12mm bolts and remove cover to access the rear zerk on the front driveshaft


Turn driveshaft by hand to the 7 o'clock position for easier access


Connect grease gun to zerk fitting and fill cavity until new colored grease is purged from all bearing seals

I'm sure this info is out there but I'm curious what off-road features the SR5 package comes with? Do you have a locker/a-trac?

The SR5 model can be purchased in 4x4, it does not come with a rear locker/A-TRAC/MTS. If you are looking for more off-road friendly/ready, then perhaps the OR model will suit you better. It comes with Bilstein 4600 series shocks, rear locker/A-TRAC/MTS and I believe the rear end is 8.5” vs 8”. The OR model also comes in 6MT. Those are the off-road features + accesory upgrades.

 

what brand and size is that? i need one for our truck.. the one i have was fine for th eoutback but doesn't fit our tacoma.

 

This is exactly what I was looking for. I’m new to DIY stuff for my 2016 sr5 rwd. Do I need to utilize a torque wrench and specs for the rear differential fill plug and drain plug? Thanks
