    So at the end there's a little over 100lbs of difference between a 1 ton axle without steering and a toyota based axle with steering. How much weight would the steering add?

    The overall weight differences between the 2 axles, to me, is not that significant to make a big deal of it like many guys do. Talking about average Joe weekend/recreational wheeler scenario. Racing is a whole different conversation, in those circles every pound you can shave off the rig can make a significant difference I imagine.

    Anyway, to me the 100 plus pounds difference per axle is a good compromise when choosing 1 tons over toyota based axles.

    In my opinion, if you’re running 35” tires or smaller a minitruck/hilux 8” axle is pretty solid, you just need to make sure the housing isn’t already bent. The axle housing market bend at the knuckle balls.

    Issue is that most people end up going to 37"s or bigger sooner or later....even when they say they never will :thumbsup:. So watch you...you might be next :D

    Toyota axles don't hold up yet you look at 90% of Toyota's out there they are on 37s, 39s, 40s all doing fine. Stop reading the internet coolaide and just go use your truck lol. Don't use it like a rock bouncer or ultra 4 car constantly or have 3000 pounds in expo crap and it'll do fine and probably impress you and others.

    Says the guy with the beefed up front axle with a bling ruff stuff housing :luvya:

    In all seriousness, yea, if you are a conservative wheeler any axle will survive regardless. But there's a bunch of guys out there with toyota rigs that wheel like maniacs. Blown 8" diffs is the most common issue I've seen with big tires.

    Still an 8 in with mini truck knuckles? Remember you called me an idiot for buying it and that it was a waste? I wouldn't say I'm a conservative or maniac wheeler but I have more power than most with the 3.4l and haven't had any problems. Go out and actually wheel your truck with other Toyota's and you'll be surprised that almost all of them are on toyota 8 in axles front and rear. I agree they are weak but to say they won't even hold up to 35s or 37s is stupid. Even marlin from marlin crawler runs 37s or 38s maybe even 39s on 8 in toyota axles. And look at the trails he's done. I'm fighting a battle that I'll never win because as long as you drink the internet coolaide you'll always need one tons a ls and an atlas in order to be able to do "real" or "hardcore" trails like the speed bumps at the mall parking lot. But believe what you want. I'll be out spending the money I saved on gas money to get to the trails and actually use my truck

    Hit the ignore button, makes this thread a whole lot better. Filter out the bs, and stay for what's left of tech here. Your out wheeling, and enjoying it the way it was designed. All too much lately the "in" thing todo is rock bounce off the limiter on every obstacle and then flaunt how much you dump on parts. No thanks. Build it how you want, and enjoy, clearly you are. Cant wait to make it out that way, east coast is lacking. In the end there two different guys on the trail, guys who call the shops that built their truck when its broken bitchin about how bad their customer support is, and then theres the guy on junkyard parts, wheeling, breaking and repairing and having a blast while doing it all. Because trail fix is half the battle :).

    Let me know if you ever come out west. Would definilty like to wheel with you since I used your build so much when doing mine. Plan is to go to Moab match 24-april 1. Doubt you can swing that but a good time to go (EJS). If not I'm always down for sand hollow, the Rubicon and whatever else. Maybe one day I'll make it out that way. But I'm just having fun doing this and it's probably time I go back to lurking on this site rather than posting.

    Shooting to drive all the way to the Rubicon around mid late july (heard temp wise its not the best idea, but the only time i can really take a few weeks off work.) As long as i can get the diamonds in time then it will be a sure thing. Enjoying seeing the different trails you post, keep it up!

    Thats where the FF rear is suppose to come into play. Be able to unlock a hub if a shaft breaks! Agreed, stock up and nothing breaks!

    Gotta love internet drama:rofl::rofl:

    At least you and I agree on fj60 axles. I really like what you and ZUK did with them, very unique builds. Those 3rd members are massive.

    Not sure if you follow his build thread on yotatech but he made a hybrid rear axle with a tacoma axle tubes and fj60 3rd member. I went check it out at his place. It looks really good. First time I see something like that.

    Yea I popped back in there the other day to see what he has done to it. Centering the rear I never really saw the point of, but I definitely get why he did it, looked like a fun project and
    an excuse to use the tools/welder.

    Have you guys considered the fj80 front axle? 63.5 wms and a high pinion differential. Also for the 4cyl guys with the w-series trans the the older model pick-up trans will bolt straight to the 4cyl bell housing and is passenger side drop to match the fj80 axle, same goes for the v6 guys the 5vz and 3vz trans are swappable aswell. Just some info
