Within one week: Saw two different Tacomas on the side of the road with emergency lights on.

I'd bet you're seeing many more vehicles on the side of the road, but are only remembering the 3rd gen tacomas because you also own one and the Tesla X's because they are unique and neat vehicles.

But I like science, so do this... record a database for the next 2 weeks of every vehicle you see broken down (make and model). Then when we get this data, we'll try and discover the ownership frequency of the vehicles in your area, then try to guestimate a breakdown rate.

No. Kamille is just bizzarre. One day it’s a thread about how tacomas are amazing, the next day it’s about how they’re sketchy. Odds are good he’s actually a goldfish and can’t remember if he likes the truck or not.

I have owned a few Toyotas including 4 pickups in the the past 45 yrs. I have also owned quite a few GM vehicles. I have had a lot less problems with Toyota , including the 2016 OR I have now. In fact it has given me zero problems so far. I do know one thing though, if people continue to trash the 3rd gen Trucks , sooner or latter they will start to decline in value, a lot of people read these blogs. If Toyota was having a lot of problems with these trucks I doubt they would have built a new plant just to try to keep up with the demand for them.

I ran the numbers. It's 50/50. Either you'll see it or you won't.

There are other details I’m interested in hearing about these orphan tacos on San Fran highways: was the hood open, was there a flat tyre, gender of the drivers, any smoke/fires involved, proximity to gas station, and length of road stay. Lucky for me my second gen has never broken down, but I’ve had my share of flats, cell use whilst in Cali, etc that required hazards on the side of the road. I hope the internet powers helps us figure this one out.

    Recall bias.

    0.0001 x #broken down tacos per day.

Not trying to be another guy pulling your chain, but we’ve all suffered from the “is my taco going to last? Did I just overpay for an unreliable vehicle?” Phobia. I guess the only thing I can share is that the longer I’ve owned a taco the less I worry about reliability (probably should worry more since it’s an aging vehicle). Good luck with your taco. Wish you many years of good reliable driving.

I think Smitty99 has single handedly created a new Psychiatric disorder, pretty soon 3rd GEN owners will be showing up on Doctor Phil and on Jerry Springers shows or writing to Dear Abby saying how buying a new Tacoma has ruined their Sex Life

I don't think it's been established that the two tacomas that were seen with flashers on the side of the road were doing so because they were actually broken. Maybe it's good news for us tacoma owners and those two particular drivers were having strokes and their trucks were fine. I'm a half glass is full kind of guy.

The idea of someone worried about their Tacoma lasting as long as they want makes sense. The idea of someone worried about whether or not they overpaid for an unreliable vehicle is absurd. Hopefully a truck lasts a million miles. And while Tacoma prices have risen, I don’t think you can spend your money/overpay on a more trustworthy new off the lot vehicle.

What? Lol. Dude. My Tacoma “ruined” my sex life and it has nothing to do with smitty. I’d just rather do Tacoma things than have sex*

That probably cause of the resale value. In my area, used 3rd gens are only about 2-5k cheaper than new. On top of that, many are selling 2016 for 2018 since TSS came standard in 2018 TRDs. Engine/transmission combos, can be easily fixed with tune and on top of that, I just don't think many people really know how atkinson cycle engines work...

Hard for humans to estimate on anecdotal results, and we very extensively over linearize data.

Did you know if you have a sample of 23 random people, there is about a 50% chance of two of them having the same birthday. I didnt believe it until i ran the numbers.

    <Geek on>
Ignore leap year crap, and assume even distribution of birthdays. Clustering of birthdays would raise odds I assume.
    23 people makes 23x22/2=253 combinations
Chances of any 1 pair not matching 364/365. Chances of 23 people not matching (364/365)^253=0.50

So chances of matching is 1-.50=about 50%

So uhhhhh... I'll Be broken down around I-93 tonight at say 11pm?

I'm pretty sure these kinds of offers are the kind of things making taco owners pull over. OP dont over think it, its the new car effect you just bought a car and you see the same one everywhere! You're definitely not focusing on the 10 Colorados / Canyons that are broken down around the those 2 Tacos....
