I'm going to purchase my first Tacoma in the next short while. I'm currently in the research phase getting myself properly educated so I can make the proper choice.

    I plan on searching for a 2016 or 2017.

I am aware of the different trim packages (SR, SR5, etc) and can pretty easily look up what each entails. I do however have a few questions as to some things never addressed from what I can see:

    1) Double Cabs: Are they the same size for all trim packages? Or does the TRD have more back row leg room than the SR5?

    2) Dimensions: Assuming I want to get a Double Cab with the short 5' bed, would overall dimensions of the different trim packages all be the same....or at least with in an inch or so? I'm slightly limited in garage space due to my work bench that will sit in front of the truck.

    3) Drivetrain: I can't find a reliable source on engine/transmission specifics. Assuming V6, auto transmission, do the different trims all use the same engine and transmission or does the TRD use a "better" V6/transmission than say the SR?

    4) PreRunner: They stopped making this with the release of Gen3, right?

This is my major set of uncertainties at the moment. Looking forward to future discussions here!!!

All dimensions look to be the same except the width on the SR, about an inch less. You can find more dimensions on Toyota website if you need more. It's for a 2018 truck, but should be identical for the 16/17s

    1 - All the same
2 - All the same. I believe an access cab + long bed is the same overall dimension if you got a double cab +short bed, so that is something to consider too.
Personally I like the double cab because you don't have the clamshell doors and I need more space in the back than I do in the bed typically. You also get proper back seats, in the access cab there are only two seats and they fold down.
3 - 3.5L v6 and transmission are the same across the board
    4 - I think so

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
I think the "PRE-RUNNER" nomenclature has been dropped for the Tacomas. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I did some quick googling and it seems like all 2wd 3rd gen Tacomas would be considered "PreRunners" from 2nd gen world.

Back during 2nd gen days Toyota had two builds...the 5 lugs and the 6 lugs.
Non-prerunner 2wds were 5 lugs and had a lesser front suspension (smaller). And we're not just talking smaller shocks/springs here. I believe it was the spindles and perhaps other components.
PreRunners were 6 lugs and had the same suspension as the 4x4s.

Now days every Tacoma has exactly the same suspension except they swap the shocks/coils. And they are all 6 lugs.

PreRunner in the sense that 2WD with v6 motor, yeah you can get this configuration in some trims. Nothing will say PreRunner on it.
