It really is super expensive to switch over the meters. I work for Seattle City Light and our metering debacle cost 30% more than expected and took 9 months longer than expected to get set up. Now we are dealing with the onslaught of customers who's bill went from $75 to $2000 for a month. I'm glad I don't work in those departments.

 

Yes. Just came across this the other day actually. Either that or they would f up your shit and put a hole through the roof I think is what I read... something about that being the way to put a house fire out or something... I think.

 

Some day Ill own one. Thats a dream truck to me lol.

 

@mach1man001 cant turn off panels and water is a conductor so they won’t spray it. Only way they would is if the FD had a special foam which I’m pretty sure nobody uses

 

My best friend is married to a career fire fighter that writes books and teaches now. They punch a hole in the roof to prevent backdrafts (remember the movie?) and pressure differences. Houses can literally explode even when there is nothing more than air as fuel.

 

This is why I would NEVER add panels to a house roof. I would add them to a barn or something where a drip or 2 wouldn't really hurt anything but never on a singled house roof. I would do what Noel mentioned also, where the panels are essentially the roof. I had a co-worker install panels on his house and he's got a nightmare on his hands. He's trying to close the permit and is stuck between engineers. The engineers for the panels are saying what they did is fine but there is a structural engineer involved saying that the house isn't built to accept the additional weight of the panels. The panels are installed and he can't get his permit closed out. Something shady obviously happened somewhere along the way, but he, as the home owner, is stuck dealing with it. Keep in mind, I work for a construction company and he's a senior superintendent. He understands permitting fairly well so whatever the install company did must have been really slick to get by him.

 

But the only reason the companies need two meters is because they charge more for power delivered than they pay for power provided. Pay the same rate both ways (seems reasonable) and you don't need to bother with installing a second meter at all, do you?

 

Wow that's crazy. You'd figure they would put some kind of shut off/kill switch that the FD could access on them. Something like race cars use to shut everything down in case of a spill

 

When you put a big V8 into a smaller truck, that is definitely okay with me! I would really like to have a second gen Tundra, regular cab with the short bed, and a supercharged 5.7 .

 

Love the old tundras, stock big motor in a Taco. Just don't think there are enough gas stations around to keep putting petro in it.

 

There is a disconnect from the panels into the house but the issue is the panels themselves. They are constantly generating electricity so, if they are breached, they are an electrical hazard all by themselves. If the fire is in a different part of the house, they can isolate the electricity being generated by the panels but if the fire is under or near the panels, you're sort of screwed.

 

I can see that.

I shake my head when I drive by a new install on a shingled roof at the end of it's lifespan.

 

FedEx NEEDS to update the tracking info for my suspension!

Tracking still says it left some place in NJ on Monday, but nothing after that, but still says expected delivery is today.

Yeah plus the added weight of the panels on the roof. I really don’t want a ton of solar panels falling through. Or have to worry about replacing shingles around them. My dad is looking at adding them with the ground mounts at their house. See what happens

 

We have just been replacing the old analog with the digital. There are some major differences between the privately owned utilities and the public ones. I see so much waste of time/resources that if we ever got it right our power could practically be free.

 

Guess it’s better then nothing. That’s great as long as the rate doesn’t jump in the future. The delivery charge thing is a bunch of BS
