What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Old shocks it gets the impact gun. That spring needs to be compressed first or it's going to be a closed casket funeral

 

So you did the bottom of the shock first and then the top? I know I'm supposed to compress with a jack but how compressed does the spring have to be??

 

For the love of all that is holy DO NOT TAKE THAT NUT OFF without the load being taken off the spring.

@Itchyfeet is right, it will be a closed casket funeral when that spring comes flying off. Those springs are under immense pressure do not mess with them if you don't know what you're doing. It WILL kill you.

 

Are you trying to assemble struts yourself? I'd be very careful doing what you're doing, try to crack it loose with all the pressure on it then use the jack to let off the pressure once you have it spinning a bit.

 

@tymeson, go find a mechanic to assemble your struts, there is a reason they do it with caged units that hold the springs in 6 or more places.

 

When I watched the video on youtube I thought this was the one they started with

I'm trying to take these off, my OME shocks and coils are already assembled

 

Then you only need to take the three nuts around the edge off.

 

I'm guilty of not following my own safety precautions. I once found a set of four mint Koni Yellows in a pick and pull and they had stock springs. Me being the cheap bastard I chained the spring to a truck bumper and zipped the nuts off with a cordless impact. Cost of a full strut assy $30 cost of a shock $5 saved a $100.

 

Ok so start with the 3 outside bolts, then the lower part of the shock that's connected to the LCA?

 

At least you took some precaution to stop it from flying at you - always a good thing, lol.

If anything on these trucks will seriously injure you while parked, it's the front coil springs.

 

You guys pretty much saved my life because I was trying so hard to get that off, I was going at it for about 15 minutes

 

Even chained down the force was pretty violent. The first one my safety squints were on and pants were nearly shat. I was more concerned about scratching the struts so I burrito wrapped them in car mats before unleashing the nut

 

Was deep into YotaTech, and found a DUALLY first gen. One of the weirdest things I've seen.

Well not as weird as whoever put a fifth wheel hitch on my other '98. Who buys a compact truck to tow something so big it necessitates a fifth wheel hitch?

 

Took off the skids today. Guess that was a bit of Montana, Wyoming, and Utah that I washed off in the alley.

 

Anyone need/want these... I am not a smart man and had some sort of convoluted thought that I could make them fit my application, that didn't pan out and now I am passing them on at a discount to my TW friends.

I wish that Tacomas popped up around here in junkyards. but they just go straight to auction and usually end up down south..

Do I Loctite the three bolts on top?

 

I don't but a little blue thread locker never hurt anything
