I thought that the output looked rather long, was also missing the rotor for the speed sensor unless you had taken it off already.

4wd output shaft installed in an a340e. 2wd a340e output loose at the bottom.

I'm confused, the torque converter is mounted to the flexplate still?

The trick is to put the torque converter on the transmission first.

Yeah no way you can seat the torque converter correctly if it's still on the flexplate.

I have no idea how you managed to separate the transmission from the engine with the torque converter still bolted to the engine.

You have to seat is correctly or YOU WILL destroy your torque converter and input shaft. Look up videos on how to do it.

Yea the torque converter is still on the flex plate. I been looking it up but I can't find a video for our trucks. I thought I had something to do with that. I been pounding and kicking the shit out of it trying to make it go in. Smh.

Like others are stating the torque converter needs to be properly seated on your trans before installing on the flex plate. Also, you did pre pour some atf in the converter right? Your going to need todo that, that way your lubed on start up.

As far as mounting the torque converter to trans, check videos online, you should run into it being "seated" a couple time before its all the way in.

Get yourself a long breaker bar with i think 19mm on the front crank and slowly spin (clockwise) the motor over, it will spin the flex plate and allow you to get to those other bolts. Should be 6 bolts iirc.

You will need to take a breaker bar with a socket (19mm I think?) and put it on the crankshaft pulley. When you turn the pulley it'll turn the flexplate so you can unbolt it from the front.

I used this video as reference:

It should 'clunk' I believe three times before it's seated. If you can't put your hand behind the torque converter, it's seated.

You need to be VERY VERY careful and make sure that torque converter is flat against the flexplate when installing it.

My torque converter was warped from a front end collision from the donor truck but you wouldn't know by looking at it. My truck ate through two flex plates before we found the TC was at fault. I paid a shop $1,200 to R&I the transmission and flexplate as a result, I would've done it myself but I didn't want to go through dropping the tranny again and more downtime on my truck.

If I were you, I would consult the A340F transmission repair manual and measure everything with a micrometer - the TC runout, mounting pad widths in relation to the mating surface, input shaft, etc. Don't make the same expensive mistake I did.

I know it sucks, I did my conversion over Winter Break so I didn't really have to drive as much as I would during the year - but I know what it's like to borrow cars. Mating the transmission to the engine is the most crucial part, if you do it wrong you will pay dearly like I did. Make sure everything is seated, flat, and within spec and you will be fine. I also recommend a fully adjustable transmission jack because you will never get that thing to mount to the engine without one. The side-to-side and up/down adjustments are absolutely imperative.

Even with the fully adjustable jack, it took me a good three hours to get the transmission aligned with the dowel pins. It is not easy.

Also dont try and mount both the transmission and transfercase bolted together. Too much of a pain and makes it even worse trying to line up with the extra weight and length. Get the trans in first, bolt up the mount and crossmemeber, then go back and install the tcase.

    +1

I did this just because I bought my transmission already mated to a transfer case and didn't want to separate the two, but it will make lining it up and jacking it up 100x easier.

The torque converter is bolted up at the same time you draw the bellhousing bolts in . You have to line up the studs in the flex plate at the same time you tighten down the bellhousing bolts . Extreme damage to the transmission pump can result if you try and bolt the bellhousing up first and then try and bolt the converter to the flywheel .

Okay so I already tightened up the bell so I need to loosen it back up? Is that what causes damage?

Yes , loosen up the bellhousing enough to get the converter bolts through the flex plate .
Hope you didnt do any damage .
Grab a converter stud once its through the flexplate and try and jiggle the stud . If it jiggles loosley , you know you are good to go . If it doesnt jiggle , the converter pilot hole is dirty and you will have to slowly draw the converter into the crankshaft pilot hole
. You have to rotate the engine by hand and slowly tighten the nutts
Start threading a nutt on one of the converter studs . Grab a big screwdriver and pull the converter into the crankshaft pilot hole .
