I do know that Spline count/gear teeth pitch does matter .. the Manual Transmission's 3.31 ratio makes that differential useless for the 5-lugs to upgrade... unless you've got an X-Runner and a useless 3.31 hunk of gearing to combine, as a free mild re-gearing upgrade over the X-Runner's 3.15 ratio...

What matters, is whether your's is a manual or an automatic transmission equipped Tacoma. Manual will likely not work (Please check). Are you planning on a gearing/tire size change-up at about the same time, or planning to remain at your current gearing ratio, if the 3.58 ratio?

The part no. i cited earlier is still theoretically valid for the automatic 3.58 ratio setup, it's a 30 spline count differential - same as the differentials found in Base/SR5 4x4's and Prerunners - again, please double-check. You can swap out the gears in the 3.58 differential with 4.10's, not needing to replace the entire differential assembly (3rd member) as in the case with a manual transmission differential setup. It was i, who was confused over what is an 8" vs an 8.4", and this wasn't helped at all by the inaccurate 4wheelparts listing.

My memory is fuzzy - even though it was only in August/September 2017 that i had this done - i had broken my shoulder, and was on some pretty heavy duty pain meds at the time.. but i believe that i did order the correct LSD, by cross-referencing the parts no., not the description itself.

For background info in my specific example, my manual transmission equipped 3.31 differential was replaced by a 2014 Tacoma 4x4 trim level SR5, 4.10 ratio assembly, sourced off of car-part.com from a domestic east-coast wrecker, and which then took a 3000 km LTL trip to get to me. Differential and LSD were combined and installed by 4wheelparts.

In short, yes.. for the Eaton Detroit Truetrac LSD meant for the '8.4', the part no is 913A541.

Hope this helps, more than it confuses or bores you.

    It does help, thank you.

My truck is an automatic (so, has the 3.58) and I was not planning on a gearing swap. I do have a little bit larger tires, but the power loss was negligible to my notice. What can I say, I drive like an old person. I might be having a move to a more snowy area and I would also like a little more traction on boat ramps and in light off-roading.

In theory - you should be good to go. The major Caveat being that i am a Social Worker by Trade, not a Mechanic.

I am very pleased with the results of my LSD upgrade over these past few months .. it's made a world of difference in traction, and improved acceleration in snow/slushy road conditions, I have no weight in the back. and yet no one-wheeled tire-fire, trying to get some traction with the open differential from a standing start on grades.
