This!! Just touch it up and call it a day. Or leave it. Makes the next scratch easier.

That one will be easy. Find one of those places that specializes in bumper cover repair. The white stuff will likely buff out, and they just have to touch up that edge. No big deal.

I'll trade my spanky new silver bumper for your gf. Even trade.;)

Serious though. I would wait a little since Toyota is still flooding the market with more Tacomas for the next 10 years. Possibly a new face lift in 2020 and that's gonna be all the rage. People constantly take off OEM parts for off-road build. You will get all these parts new for pennies on the dollar.

Yep. OEM parts are exspensive for the 3rd gen right now due to not that many of them on the road. 2nd gen bumpers and parts are significantly cheaper now since it was in production for 10 years.

I was looking to replace my black matte plastic fender flares on my off road for color matched MGM fender flares and the only way to get some if someone pulls them off their TRD sport or SR5 and sell it on eBay and are selling them for a pretty penny ($400-600).

I am going to wait until toyota starts selling them pre-painted and that's probably going to be when the 3rd gen gets refreshed in 2019-2020 with a new grille and bumper.

That's when the bumpers and other body parts on the 2016-2019 pre facelift models will be cheaper and the OP can get an new pre-painted bumper without breaking the bank if he can wait a couple more years.

Touch it up and forget about it.

Or have her pay to repaint the whole bumper.

Order paint for your car from Dr. color chip. Very easy system to use.

If you get paint from a dealer. Then don’t use the brush that the touch up paint comes with. Go out to a art store and get the finest stiff brush you can do you can dab the paint into the scratch.

FYI No brushing the paint on.

Ok, I've been watching this thread degrade and I just can't take it anymore. (Full disclosure: I'm a bit OCD about my vehicles and have been detailing for more years than I want to admit to.) But I just can't take the "advice" I'm seeing in some of the posts here anymore. It's a truck, leave it. Touch it up with a brush. Get some touch up spray paint from the dealer. Use the Dr. Colorchip system. Use Maaco. Lord help me - and the OP! He's got a brand new truck for crying out loud!

So let me offer some actual advice rather than just a pure rant. First of all, no off the shelf spray on or brush on touch up product is going to bring that particular damage back to anything close to "as new" condition. In fact many of them - especially the rattle can spray touch up - are going to make it way worse. Why? It's hard enough for a professional painter in a spray booth with professional products to match almost any paint - especially silver. (And remember, the paint on the OP's truck is basecoat / clearcoat.) Do any of you really think slobbering on single stage rattle can silver (without any clearcoat) in a garage is going to look like anything less than a total disaster? And as for the "brush on" touch ups, I've used a ton of them (including Dr. Colorchip) and all of them will look like hell on this particular damage. Think of what the Used Car Manager at a dealership is going to do when he sees that mess at trade in time. And by then most of it will be peeling off!

The only real way of getting that Bumper Cover to look like it's never been hit will be to take it to a professional Body Shop to have it professionally painted. And yes, that's probably going to cost between $500-$700. Hell, the paint alone (in the can) will be well over a hundred bucks. But a good body Shop will remove the Bumper Cover, sand, fill and feather the damaged area, then remove or mask trim pieces before prepping, priming, painting and buffing (if needed) the whole Bumper Cover. See why it costs so much for "proper" body work?

Now if the OP really doesn't care how his new truck looks, I take all of this back.

I’d have her take a pregnancy test.

Seriously (kinda)... my wife is an excellent driver, but when she was pregnant she got use out of the bumpers. Her depth perception got thrown off.

    Haha, just checking your heart.

    ‘‘Tis but a scratch.

hey guys not sure what forum to put this in but was hoping someone can help me out I have had my Tacoma for about 3 months brand new still and a have gotten a rock chip right on the side of the hood. The chip has taken all of the paint of and is down to the primer and is about the size of the tip of a Qtip was wondering if anyone would recommend using the dr paint chip kit to repair it or to DIY it and go the route of wet sanding and waxing and fixing that way. Just curious to see if anyone has seen better results from one or the other.
    Thanks guys

That's a pretty good sized chip. Sorry to hear that. As for the repair, personally, I think you'll be much happier with either the Dr. Colorchip system or a bottle of touch up paint from your dealer. The Dr. Colorchip system works quite well on smaller chips, but with their new smoothing tool, you might just get away with it on what you have. Very carefully dabbing touch up paint into the chip will yield slightly less attractive results.

As for wet sanding, you said "wet sanding and waxing" and that's not going to work at all when the color and clear coats are no longer there. It only works for minor scratches in the clear coat - generally something that you cannot feel with your fingernail. You're well past that. Hope that helps.
