So you can still tow with this? AT the full rating of the truck?

    Good question...and yes..you can.

It is rated MORE than the towing capacity of the Tacoma.

It meets the SAE rated Class IV coupling classification requirement:

---750 lb maximum vertical tongue weight
    ---7500 lb maximum towing weight

    Everything TW members recommend
How were the tow ratings determined? Do you test under DOT requirements?

Not the DOT...we used an independent testing lab who used the standards in accordance with SAE J684 and V-5 Class 4 (8,500lbs) GVWR. More on the SAE here http://www.sae.org/ It did rate higher than we've publicly rated it for...can't say how much, but plenty.

In 10 years and many thousands sold, we've had only 3 come back... There are people out there who push the limits and then some...we can't slap hands, but we have tested our stuff and know what it's capable off.

The Hitchgate has been tested up to 10Gs of stress...note their comments:

    Experimental G Loads
FWY and around town was no more than 3.9+ and .8- Gs.
Off road normal to moderate ranged from 5.8+ to 7.8+ by 3.4- to 4.1- Gs.
Off road moderate to severe (too abusive for continuous driving) 8.0-9.0+ to in excess of 5.0- Gs
(meter pegged at 5.0- but truck did leave the ground on occasion so expect 5.0- may only be 6.0 or so)

Shame I missed this.. I would've loved that ~$600 price mark on the MAX.
