As a new dad, I'm trying to be a "responsible" consumer here. Usually I could give a rats ass about what others think. It seems actual car review sites give it decent ratings... i will say that.

Congrats on the new baby. Do your child a favor... ignore consumer reports and buy a vehicle you can actually pass onto the lil tyke.

No harm at all in researching such a big purchase...just take into consideration the sources and you'll be fine.

"Consumer Reports has never liked the top-selling midsize pickup truck in America, the Toyota Tacoma. Opinions aside, Consumer Reports also reports on survey data from its huge pool of subscriber owners. The two don't seem to jive when it comes to reliability of this popular truck.

In 2016, Consumer Reports listed the top-selling Tacoma as a "Worst Buy." In 2017, the Tacoma made the list again. In both the 2016 and 2017 summaries of the Tacoma, Consumer Reports rated the Tacoma just 1 out of 5 for predicted reliability (one being the lowest). Two full model years have passed, and two years of Consumer Reports reliability survey data have now been published. So how did the "Worst Pick" Tacoma actually turn out? Pretty good it seems."

Doing your research and asking the question is a solid move. Although... you *are* in a Tacoma forum, haha. My experience is only a week old, but I have no regrets yet!

All I have for car/truck buying... test drive test drive test drive. Take your time, ask yourself if it sucks. If yes, don't buy it. If no, wait a week and do it again. After the third reasonable test drive, if it still doesn't suck... quit playing with your food and eat it! Buy that shit up!

CR loves the ridge line. Sounds like your options are:

    1. Buy the thing you hate that CR loves
    2. Ignore CR and buy the truck you know you want

I don't remember who said this on TW. Something to the effect of reading TacomaWorld and researching all the issues with third gens is akin to going to the ER and noticing everyone is sick. A terrible paraphrase on my part.

not sure if this matters, but my best post for this is:

every vehicle has some bullshit. Tacomas are one of the most mod-friendly vehicles you can buy. so buy one and fix it how you like.

this applies to everything on the truck that's not a lemon problem.

that, and go for the MT.

I had a 16 and then went into a 17 because I wanted the long bed for kayaks and such.... I came from a 2000 jeep grand Cherokee. I'm not a soccer mom....I have driven trucks before. I LOVE MY TRUCK! Maybe it's a good thing soccer mom's or whoever don't like em? Then at least I don't have to worry about slapping someone who asks to borrow it?

I have always relied on Consumer Reports for vehicles, appliances and just about everything else they cover... They are a non-biased third party collection bucket of information. I wonder how they rate the Chevys and Fords though, I honestly haven't looked. When I bought my first Toyota, they were best of the best according to Consumer Reports... And I agreed with them.

I have had a 1st gen, 2 2nd gens, and now my 3rd Gen Tacoma's and they have all been rock solid Trucks. The only issue I really have with my 2017 is the Howling Rear Diff, which I will get taken care of with the new TSB.

Because what they used to rate reliability initially such as radio resetting, transmission reflash, cps fail on a few, etc was flawed from day one.
It has been corrected it seems to accurately describe the true reliability.

You’ll be most satisfied by capturing what you’ve been lusting for.

If you don’t like it after driving it for a while, you can always sell it. So no worries there. Tacoma has the highest truck resale value.

If you want a great truck, get a Tacoma.

If you don’t want a great truck, perhaps something else is in order.

I think the truck-like ride criticism isn't what bothers me. Its the reliability issues the "consumers" speak of making it in the 10 worst. Do you guys think this doesn't include 2018s as they might have ironed out a lot of issues?

I'm curious to what those issues are. Do you have access to what they are? I think sharing those may shed light on the answers you seek.
