Halogen Bulbs in HID Projector?

First of all, I'm ignorant with lighting. For this reason I purchased an awesome HID retrofit from @kustom54lighting. All the sheet metal under my hood is now destroyed, and I had a battery cage rip out and damage the H4 HID controller and lost my headlights on a trail. I've since replaced it and relocated my battery to a mount on the bed cage.

I'm going to cut all the sheet metal out and complete the engine cage. While I'm at it I'd like to get rid of the ballasts & controller to reduce possible points of failure and run the stock headlight connector.

The question is, can I put a halogen bulb in the projector without any issues? I've been looking around and the million threads involving HID's are all retrofit or comparisons. I like the idea of LED's if they'd produce less heat, but it seems they won't work well with projectors?

I'm not looking for the brightest lights in the world. What I want is simple wiring, enough light to see during normal night driving, and a good cutoff so I'm not blinding oncoming traffic. Preferably while maintaining the look of these projector headlights.

I was searching for halogens in HID projectors. When I went back and searched for the thread I bought those from then looked up the H1 it appears I can just put an "H1" halogen bulb in.

You'll have to make the hole in the back of the projector larger for a halogen bulb. That means you'll never be able to use HID there again either.

 

Well that sucks. I'm wondering if I'd just be better off selling them. I didn't even install the wiring for the halo's. All I really wanted was a projector with black housing.

What would you charge for a halogen setup that looks similar to what I have? Would you be interested in a trade or making me some?

If you're looking to eliminate potential failure points, I'd get rid of projectors altogether. Nothing is simpler than a basic halogen bulb. Projectors have solenoids inside the housing that are used to cycle between high and low beam. I'm sure it's not an overly common failure point, but just another moving part and you'll still need some sort of controller to activate this solenoid even if you go with halogens.

 

This. If you want halogens, go back to stock.

 

Solenoids are as reliable as the Tacoma's engine. That's not a point of concern.

 

Even Toyota has to warranty an engine every so often... I've had one go out on me and they stuck to change because it's basically all the steps of doing a retrofit. Granted, even if one fails, you're going to be stuck on either high beams or low beams but you'll still have light. They just won't cycle.
