Excuse the poor picture, drawing on my phone with my finger is tougher than it looks. This is what the timing marks were when I assumed it had jumped and took it apart before correcting the spark issue.

Crank at TDC, both cams at 45ish degrees off. With splotches of paint(red and black) the sizes of nickles on the “spoke” of the cam gear lining up with the cam timing mark on the “backing plate”

And to clarify the belt never actually broke but had huge stress cracks going across it with the tensioner maxed out

I did that initially and as recently as yesterday. Has absolutely no effect on it.

I cross posted this elsewhere and someone suggested a bad maf sensor (which I have cleaned but not tested yet...) I’ve had cars run without them if not better when they are bad, would it actually cause a no start issue on these engines or no?

So a little update and I feel like an idiot over this whole thing... timing marks were legit and were definitely jumped...

Initially I thought spraying either into the throttle body vacuum line and getting NOTHING ruled out a fuel issue but I put everything back together tonight and was fed up, squirted some fuel down the throttle body cranked it and it started, Rev’d to 1500 rpm for just a few brief seconds and stalled.

I replaced what looks like an original fuel filter that was completely rotted, got a ton of pitch black fuel dumped all over me. I cranked it to see if the fuel pump was getting power and it is...

I don’t a fuel pressure tester but am going to go to harbor freight when my check cashes Friday, mood is way up because this thing has had me really down...

I’m kinda just assuming I am getting fuel but not enough (sludged up pump screen/tank?) and that’s why it got rougher and roug over time until it finally died on me. Also for anyone who reads this down the road with concern over yellow spark, I still have it with new plugs, wires and coils so apparently it isn’t necessary and nothing to fuss over.

    Thoughts?

Or not enough, I know I was getting fuel on the plugs at one point.

I honestly thought it not firing on a shot of either meant I could narrow out the fuel but I learned something today.

If I had a bad efi relay under the hood would I still have power to the pump or no?

Ordered a new fuel pump, andfilter installed it and there was no difference (the strainer was pretty dirty and the filter was filled with pure black gasoline) so I wired it externally so the battery for 12v and I’ve heard it prime for the first time since owning the truck. The factory wiring is all brown and fried looking when I stripped the wiring on top of the sending unit to splice it in.

So now I finally have an audible priming of the pump, and a ton of pressure. So much pressure that it blasted a pinhole in my fuel line just past the fuel filter.... so I’m thinking it just had low voltage on the pump this whole time because I could never get it to make any noise and got minimal fuel out of the banjo fitting when I cranked it. Waiting to get a fitting and small piece of hose tomorrow to test it out.

So giving his one more shot before I give up on this...

I now have the correct fuel pressure at the rail with the new fuel pump directly wires at 12v, fuel filter and I even got a new battery just in case. When I crank the engine it sometimes acts like it wants to catch but cranks forever with no luck. It soaks the plugs in just a few seconds when cranked. However... when I pour a shot of fuel in the throttle body like before it starts, revs up to 3k, the fuels burns and it dies...

I’m lost with why it would do that. Thoughts?

If I can’t fix it by tomorrow I’m just bringing it to the shop, and I’ll update regardless for anyone who might run into this in the future

Gonna pull the injectors out of my spare truck tonight and swap them ASAP. It is all cylinders that flood almost immediately, is it possible all failed open like that?

Could the opposite of too much pressure with a faulty fuel pressure regulator cause similar issues in your opinion?

I’m gonna come back and update a few things later but just wanted everyone to know I finally figured out this truck.

Even though I swapped the pump and the fuel looked fine in the tank at the moment...: someone apparently dumped a gallon of water in my gas tank.

Hence why the plugs were soaked (won’t burn water) and it always fires up when fuel was dumped down the throttle body. Thanks again for the help everyone.

One thing I want to mention real quick for anyone in the future is dontchase blue spark on these vehicles, you don’t need it and it will fire and run fine with yellow.

    Hey folks
During timing belt replacement procedure, You are supposed to turn only clockwise to align the marks. What happens if by mistake if we cranked anti clockwise.? This is for a 3.4l but on a 03 Tacoma. Thanks.
