Shopping for hid/or led and need some help deciding

Shopping for either of the two. Have been doing some research and would like some help from fellow Tacoma owners. I hear hids are better for LB headlight and leds for fogs? I found both these on Amazon...

I personally like HID over LED for low beam. They're a huge improvement over halogens and IMO much better than LED. LEDs just don't have the throw of proper HIDs. I'm running a hylux 35W kit with 4300k bulbs.

IMO, I think running LED bulbs in your fogs might be blinding towards oncoming drivers since there's no cutoff. However, you can get some LED units that completely replace the fog light unit like morimotos that have a cut off so you don't blind oncoming drivers.

I am running LED for my high beams though and they do quite well; I have the review in my signature.

Yes it does. I’ve also seen on reviews people using leds for HB because you have that delay when they first turn on. As for the fogs, those are where I’m a little lost.. I’ve never changed fogs before on any of my cars to hids or leds... but it makes sense not having a cutoff

 

How long have you had there kit? I know they have been around for years so that’s why I’m thinking of going with them.. had them on one of my cars years ago

Love my Hikari LED's with the Phillips LED's. The thread mentioned above had a good discussion about them.

 

HIDs are a far superior choice. The 12000 (theoretical) lumen LEDs in that thread actually produce ballpark around 1300 effective lumens when you account for all the ways of how overinflated those numbers are. The side-firing directional LEDs do not effectively illuminate the reflective surfaces in the projector/reflector responsible for downfield throw. You can see in the page linked above where there are unlite parts of the reflector. Meaning poor light source, bad optics and lack of distance projection. 35w HIDs produce 3200 actual lumens or 2.5x brighter than those LEDs. And the omni-directional light source emits light in all directions utilizing the entire internal reflector inside the projector so you don't have the same loss of projection issues. While the halogen projector is optimized for a halogen light source, you will get much better results with HID over LED. Best color to chose is low-mid 4000k, often 4300k. This color temperature usually produces the most lumens and is a better color temperature for night vision and results in less light refraction (surface glare) in poor weather conditionings than those higher in the color spectrum.

 

As mentioned you should not run LEDs or HIDs in your OEM halogen fog reflector. Your low beam headlight projectors will clean up the bad light source and prevent glare, your fog reflectors will not, and cause significant glare and loss of your beam pattern. You need to swap the entire assembly to run LEDs in the fogs. The most popular LED swap is the Morimoto LED fogs, which are a direct bolt in replacement for your stock fog assemblies. Since they are designed from the ground up as LEDs the optics are correct for the light source and they provide nice clean cut offs with a flat widely distributed beam.

Running HIDs in OEM halogen fog lights poses a major risk of melting the housing & potentially more damages. I think couple of folks on here already melted their fog light housings by putting in HID bulbs. In a worst case it may even trigger an electrical spark/fire.

Nokya H11 halogen bulbs in my fogs and love the visibility in bad weather.
XenonDepot hids in my low-beams (6k bulb).
It is a good idea to use LEDs in fog lights if you want the HID look without changing the reflectors.
Don't use LED bulbs in headlights/low-beam as you will actually loose visibility and it will be a waste of money/time to return them.

 

I highly recommend the morimoto XB LED fog lights. They are great for the price- perfect cutoff, nice white modern light output, and an extremely wide beam pattern. I also run morimoto's 35w 5500k HID elite system for my low beams which provide substantially more light than the stock halogens. They do have the infamous "bounce" issue but it isn't as bad as others I've seen on youtube luckily.
