This is what my dealer claimed at my 30k service. For the price, I declined.

BS or normal? Any guide to do this myself? They don’t appear to be normal, basic spark plugs. I have the V6.

The 30000 mile service is the first expensive one. My dealer offered me an extended Toyota care warranty that covers it. I have to buy it before 25000 miles and it is cheaper than the 30000 service.

I'd say 30k is a good time to change them. But really depends on your gap. Over time the gap grows, making your coil pack work harder to jump the gap. Plugs are cheaper than coil packs.
And yes just do it yourself.

Every 60K is pretty standard. If the dealership is telling you every 30K, I'd find a new dealership.

Regardless of the change interval, doing it yourself on the 3rd gen V6 may not be as easy as it sounds. Passenger side - no problem as you can easily move shit out of the way to get at the coil pack bolts. Driver's side - not so easy. The SM states that you have to remove the upper intake assy (that air tank bullshit) to change plugs. That air tank hangs right over the front coil pack and perhaps blocks the middle one too. Nope, I've not attempted it yet but just a caution to ppl that think they're gonna swap out their plugs in a few minutes.. you might want to have a look under that engine cover first!

Even on the 2nd gen, 30k isn’t really necessary. 60k is more like it. Toyota is just trying to make money off of maintenance. Kind of like how dealers recommend oil changes every 3k/3 months. Total overkill

Have to do it on the 1st gen as well. Not a big deal.
Take some pictures of your engine before starting, label all hoses and connections that need to be removed, and get at it.

Depends on what plugs you run as well, I have platinum iridiums in my wifes vehicle that are at 90K right now. Was going to change them last week, pulled one and it was still within spec.

Regardless, the 30K interval costs $10 more than the regular one because they change the air filter.

I didn't have to take the upper intake manifold off my 1st gen Tacoma to get the plugs out. I did remove the intake to make it easier on the passenger side though. This was for the 3.4l v6.

I just went out and looked at my 1st gen, and you are correct. The driver side is easy peasy without removing anything. Passenger side requires partial removal of intake tubing leading up to the TB. I guess I was thinking of when I replaced the valve cover gaskets at the same time. The drivers side requires removal of the intake plenum sitting over it to get to the inner bolts.

Regardless it really isn't brain surgery. Nor was changing the water pump, timing belt and pulleys either. So, I don't see why it would be any harder to replace spark plugs on the 3rd gen. Folks shouldn't be shy to work on their rigs. Just get a manual, watch Youtube, or have a buddy help, but get some tools and go at it (if it isn't covered under warranty, or ToyotaCare).

OK why the hell would you need to take off anything after #4? Just replace the plugs. Getting new plastic stuff seems like $ not needed to be spent unless there is something wrong it. Never in the history of my Tacos have I ever needed to do this much crap for spark plug changes...my Subaru too. o_O

Granted, I understand removing a few hoses and maybe the cover for ease, but some of this stuff seems way overkill.

That is what I thought. I let my 03 got to 120k after changing them at 30k and they were flawless. The third gen seems reasonable to change 30-60k, but I do not see why you have to take ALL that other shit off to replace plugs. Just use a long ass extension?

Sorry...it's confusing because of how I edited and copied everthing.
All that stuff after step 4 is actually step 1.
