Wind is picking up again here in NV, maybe 30-35mph. Nice to have a 3/4 moon. 28degreesF again last night. That dip in the jetstream is unsettling the weather for a while now. Forgot to buy an anemometer. Water, 16g of propane, ham, grapes, corn tortillas were the priorities. Dinty Moore Beef Stew with a dash of crushed red pepper and said corn tortillas for dinner. Added carrots.

We'll get a piece of that tomorrow. I figure wind and cold rain. There's still snow on the peaks west of Mesquite, been there for about three weeks. Been a cold stretch in the Southwest.

If you eat Dinty Moore beef stew every day you would be dead in a year...so much sodium

Doesn't the crushed red pepper and corn tortillas counteract that somewhat? That's my redneck figuration. And added carrots, that has to count.

Solar Luci lights... I leave a few of them laying on the dash. Like $12, inflatable, waterproof, put a cheapo clip on 'em and hang 'em anywhere. You can even run a piece of bungie through one, strap it to your noggin and go full-on psycho spaceman coal miner...

If you wanna go bonkers pick up some of those peel 'n stick magnet sheets for making your own refrigerator business cards... trim some strips and stick 'em on the Luci light. Smack - instant under-hood work light.

I have fond memories of the Coleman stove and lantern times, but they were high-maintenance. Lanterns were nice for warming your hands, drying out clothes. Had to keep the cork in the pump handle oiled or no soup for you. I had extra mantles for the lantern in my tackle box.

Yeah, it's all gold Pony Boy, but then I remember white gas flavored oatmeal 'cause the lantern or stove leaked/burped fuel in the food box goin' over the pass... there's so much good cheap solar, rechargeable, LED stuff and a JetBoil that, sadly, the old green Coleman stuff is obsolete

What length shovel is good to have? I currently have a 27in fiberglass handle shovel. Was wondering if that’s a good size or if I should move up to a 40in?

Any shovel is better than no shovel, but if it were up to me I’d bring a long handled spade.

“Drop point” is a spade. Short handles have their uses but you can always choke up on a long handle. If you’ve used what you have and you like it then I reckon you’re gold.
